In this curricular unit the aim is to present the concepts of descriptive statistics, method of probability calculing and statistical inference. All these statistical tools will allow students to interpret, formalize and solve problems involving quantitative data analysis.

Syllabus

1.DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

1.2 - Frequency Distributions
1.3 - Measures of location and dispersion

2. PROBABILITIES
2.1 - Definition of probability and axioms of probability theory
2.2 - Conditional probability and independent events
2.3 - Total probability theorem
2.4 - Bayes theorem

3. DISCRETE RANDOM VARIABLES
3.1 - Random variable definition
3.2 – Discrete probability distributions

4. CONTINUOUS RANDOM VARIABLES
4.1 – The Uniform Distribution
4.2 – The Normal distribution and central limit theorem
4.3 – The Chi-Square distribution
4.4 – The Student-t Distribution

5. CONFIDENCE INTERVALS
5.1 - Confidence Interval with a sample
5.2 - Confidence Interval with two samples

6. TESTS OF HYPOTHESIS
6.1 – Tests of Hyphotesis with a sample

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

Statistics is essential in the context of business sciences, as it is to know of statistical techniques that allows drawing the conclusions about the population from the sample. The contents of this curricular unit have been developed to allow the acquisition of the theoretical background needed in several areas of business and management and the consequent practical application of them. Descriptive statistics allows the description and interpretation of information contained in a set of numerical data.The probabilities and distributions are essential to the construction of confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. The acquisition of such knowledge allows students to formalize, interpret and solve problems.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The assessment is carried out with two tests and a final exam.
