Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

This course is an introduction to the management function. It will focus on the fundamental concepts of management. After an introduction to management and organizations, main topics will be planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

- Understand the fundamentals of business management;
- Understanding the nature and functioning of organizations as socio-economic systems;
- Understand the responsibilities and roles of the manager;
- Understand the environment of organizations;
- Know and understand the components of the management cycle;
- Know how to characterize the different functional areas of management;
- Analyze the main concepts and theories within the functions of the management process.

- Analyze information to help develop the strategic positioning of a business.

Teaching methodologies

Due to COVID-19 virus outbreak and rules and regulation in place, this course is now ministered online only.

The course is structured around lectures, which familiarize students with the theoretical and practical body of the course, based on practical work and case studies that provide consolidation of knowledge and develop various skills for application.

While the lectures encourage the use of the exposition and participation method, practical lessons seek to coordinate between different work modalities (individual study and collaborative work) that create different training situations.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

Continuous Assessment (includes all 3 topics):
1. FE - Final Essay (40% of grade)
2. FP – Forum participation (a)
3. WG – Workgroup assignments (a)

Final Essay (FE) – Individual essay (10 pages, maximum) about an article/theme proposed by the lecturer and related with Management research area. Activity to be held in Moodle.

Forum participation (FP) – Individual activity to be held in Moodle, corresponding to answering short questions about course contents or general related topics, posted in the “Content Questions and Class Discussions” forum.

Workgroup assignments (WG): – Team presentation and discussion of 2 (two) exercises or practical cases (working groups of 2 students) to be held in Teams platform, about subjects to be designated by the lecturer.

(a) The grade point average of the two individual tasks (FE + FP), cannot be less than 9,5 points. It has a weight of 0,6 on the final mark.

In case of a grade point average of the two individual tasks less than 9,5 or a final average grade less than 10, the student must take a final written exam.

FINAL MARK = 0,4 FE + 0,6 (a)

Final Assessment: (only for those students who are unsuccessful in Continuous Assessment):

1. Individual written exam (10 as minimum grade).
