Teaching language

Portuguese

Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Portuguese Sign Language.

This is the final course in the area of translation and interpretation. The knowledge and skills developed previously throughout the course will be extended and the areas of specialization started in TPTI4 will be continued. .
Technical, theoretical and practical knowledge in the various areas of ILGP, will be developed and
extended and will include everyday contexts of intervention, judicial settings, religious and conference
settings, amongst others. There will be a broadening of language skills in the relevant languages:
Portuguese Sign Language and Portuguese.
It is expected that students will develop the level of their technical, theoretical and practical knowledge in order to produce work translations and interpretations of a varied degree of difficulty, and will know how to adopt appropriate strategies in different contexts. They should also demonstrate awareness of the social and cultural characteristics of the deaf community, to increase translation effectiveness.

Syllabus

Development and enrichment of vocabulary and translation practice for LGP in different specialized
contexts.
The work of the interpreter in the court system, in religious and conference settings, social and academic; performing arts: poetry and music, amongst others not
specified here. The application of Portuguese Sign Language interpreting to new areas of work and the
respective requirements associated with this. Linguistic and cultural translation strategies; practical exercises of translating and interpreting from and to LGP.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

Understanding of the roles of the translator interpreter of LGP and acquiring theoretical and practical
knowledge is improving. The themes addressed in this UC are intended to lead students to deepen and
develop their knowledge and skills in the field of translation and interpretation in general and in the context of the LGP in particular.

Teaching methodologies

Theoretical approach: themes; distribution of documentation; theme-oriented research; presentation of
topics related to the post content research students; discussion and debate. Practical approach: practical
exercises of interpretation and translation; translation exercises in LGP; audio and video recordings and
its analysis and correction, translation exercises for voice by viewing videos and practice reading of
respective written translation and his LGP/oral; preparation of video and audio recordings glosses and
glosses.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The close link between the theoretical approach and practical approach aims to encourage the active
participation of interested students, which is essential to the progress of the discipline and to achieving
success in the ratings. As well as class participation, guided research, successful completion of the tasks
set by the teacher, the course will also encourage participation in extracurricular activities (seminars,
meetings, conferences and events related to the deaf community) which will enhance the knowledge
gained in the classroom and reinforce the development of theoretical and practical knowledge. The
students should have the ability to identify, select and use appropriate translation strategies for different
translation and interpreting contexts, and should be able to produce translations of advanced difficulty.
The practical exercises developed in this course aim to create an environment conducive to the
assimilation of this knowledge and adoption of appropriate strategies.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

Theoretical evaluation (theoretical work/test) – 30%
Practical evaluation (1/2 practical work of translation for LGP/LP - audiovisual recording and gloss) – 40%
TLGP+25% TLP = 65%
Participation; Attendance; Autonomous work; Homework – 5%
.................
The assessment by examination includes three tests:
1- theoretical test in writing, with a duration of 1 hour + 30 minutes of tolerance (30% of the grade);
2- practical assessment consisting of a video recording of a translation from LP to LGP, duration 5 minutes, followed by the elaboration of a written gloss analysis and correction of the recorded video, with a duration of 1 hour (50% of the grade).
