Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Acquire basic knowledge of photojournalism, the camera gear of the photojournalist, framing and composition, light, flash, ISO or light sensitivity, aperture diaphragm, camera lens ... Techniques of reporting news. Raising awareness on the importance of the image in society, in the press and media.
Conjugation between the form and content of the photographic image. Ethics in journalism. The captions of the photographs, contextualization and information.
Understanding the different editorial goals.

Syllabus

Brief introduction of the history of photojournalism.
The importance of photography in the press.
The photography as information.
The image and its relationship with the word.
Ethics in photojournalism.
Technical notions about photography.
The camera gear of the Photojournalist, equipment.
The pratice of news photography, photojournalism.
The use of editing programs in photojournalism, ethics in photo editing.
News photography, reportage, sports, society, portrait, politics, culture, feature.


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

Acquire the technical skills for production and editing photos for news. News and reportage, different journalistic genres. The importance of photo editing and ethics. The labor market photojournalist. Presentation of newspapers, magazines, news agencies, social media and image banks. Realization, editing and presentation of reports made by students.

Teaching methodologies

Practical classes and theoretical classes. The analysis of the work of contemporary photographers and the history of photography as visual and cultural education. Discussion of ideas for reportage, get information, shooting with objectives and respect the reality. Manipulation and ethics. Practice of photography with students, street photography and photoreportage. Analysis and constructive criticism of each student's work.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Analysing and discussing photography with the goal of visual culture and media. The work and evaluation methods focus on the exercises of photojournalim practice and in the application of acquired knowledge, combined with research and the reading of books and texts related with Photography. The exercise of critical awareness in work and society, which the communication professional may involve, interconnects with the course objective of integrating the scholar in a professional and market practice.

Assessment methodologies and evidences


60% final classification
Individual work: big photographic report on Pandemic / COVID-19 on along the lines previously defined. In the class of 1 Abril (1st distance class) discuss the possibilities and ideas about the proposed new report.
Delivery will be made by email on the date scheduled in this schedule. The delivery effective with receipt of a confirmation email from the teacher.

40% final classification
Interim exercises requested in class and performed individually. The delivery will be included in the final portfolio, having been presented in class on the dates proposals, by wetransfer to the teacher's email. Delivery takes place with reception confirmation message from the teacher.
