Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Student knows the characteristics of specific populations depending on the type of disability or impairment, characterizing its behavior in the cognitive, motor and socio-affective domain.
Student understands the importance of physical activity and sports on populations with specific characteristics as a privileged means of promoting health and physical fitness, mental well-being and emotional and social integration.
Demonstrates mastery of methodological knowledge to develop and manage programs and projects in the area of physical activity and adapted sports to specific populations, depending on their clinical status, their disabilities or functional limitations, level of physical fitness and their interests and motivations.

Syllabus

Concepts, Models and Prospects: The concept of Adapted Physical Activity; Fields of the behavior and development "atypical “concept; The concepts of impairment, disability and handicap; The International Classification of Functioning (ICF); Brief evolution history of APA; Social approaches to disability in contemporary societies.
Types and classification of disability: Taxonomy of the disability; Hearing loss; Visual impairment; Motor disabilities; Mental retardation; The particular case of learning disabilities; Behavioral problems
Competitive Sport for Persons with Disabilities: Models of organizing sports and disability; Aspects of sport and adapted physical activity
Sports: Regulation and modes of participation; Physiological benefits of adapted sports; Socio-psychological benefits of sports adapted; General aspects of training in athletes with disabilities.


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

Purpose: Characteristics of special populations.
Syllabus: Concepts, Models and Prospects, Type and Rating Disability

Purpose: To understand the importance of physical activity and sport.
Syllabus: physiological benefits of adapted sports; Psychological benefits of adapted sports.

Purpose: Demonstrates mastery of methodological knowledge to develop and manage programs and projects in the area of physical activity and disability sports.
Syllabus: social approaches to disability in contemporary societies. Models of organization of adapted sports; General aspects of training athletes with disabilities.

Teaching methodologies

The course’s work plan focus on the participation of students, throughout individual or group participation from information provided by the teacher or with the use of texts and other materials.
Exhibition sessions and discussion of themes. Applied practice sessions.

The process will comprise: (a) the exposure of subjects by teachers, (b) guided the discussion of issues in plenary and / or small groups, (c) the realization of practical or applied; (d) the preparation of written work; (e) the presentation and discussion of group work.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Purpose: Characteristics of special populations.
Teaching methodology:
The activities include observation sessions of physical activity with special populations and / or visiting clubs/academies with Adapted Sports classes.

Purpose: To understand the importance of physical activity and sport.
Teaching methodology:
The activities will be supplemented with a component of the Seminar of some relevant issues on Sport for people with disabilities.

Purpose: Demonstrates mastery of methodological knowledge to develop and manage programs and projects in the area of physical activity and disability sports.
Teaching methodology:
Expresses ownership and use of knowledge about the different contents addressed throughout the production of the proposed work.

At the end of course skills expected are located around the following areas: (a) expresses' knowledge on the different contents addressed, (b) uses, carefully and reasonably the acquired knowledge in practical/ applied situations, (c) demonstrates ability to literature written in carrying out work and / or oral presentations.

The course work focus the active participation of students, throughout individual work or work group, based on information provided directly by the teacher or with the use of texts and other materials.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

It is expected that the student: participate in the discussion of the issues under addressed; read the literature of support and be prepared to analyze and discuss issues addressed; perform the tasks and scheduled jobs.
Process Evaluation (50%): performance in carrying out different types of tasks (research and production of written synthesis, practical or applied works, book reviews, reports, oral presentations, critical participation).
Product Evaluation (50%): performance in written test on a subject matter addressed.

Attendance system

It is expected that each student: (a) is present in at least 80% of classes and participate in the discussion of the issues under review, as well as in the work proposed (b) read the literature to support and be prepared to analyze and discuss the issues presented, (c) perform the tasks and scheduled work, showing with clarity and rigor of knowledge acquired.
