Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

In this UC is intended that students develop the following competencies:
- Know and understand the phenomena and processes of communication as sociological objects.
- Develops research activities in the field of communicative phenomena.
- Communicates effectively using the English language for academic purposes.
- Manages effectively relevant information about the communicative phenomena in Sociology and Communication.
- Uses Properly the technologies of information and communication.
- Organize and plan personal work.

Syllabus

The Communication as a sociological object - sociological reductionism and multidimensionality of communication.
The emergence of mass society - the economic and social changes in the twentieth century and the media.
The Mass Communication - Studies of the effects: The Paradigm of Lasswell and the unlimited effects.
Mediation processes and the limited effects of mass communication: The models of two-step flow and multi-step flow.
The Marxist criticism - ideological manipulation of the mass culture.
From the effects of the messages to the effects of communication technologies: Mc Luhan and the global village.
The production of communication - the gatekeeping and the news selection criteria.
The agenda-setting and the construction of social reality.
Thematization and public opinion.
The communication in an organizational context: The communication professions.
Globalization and Technological Revolution: The Network Society.


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

The selection of the programmatic contents of this uc seeks to ensure a diversity of theoretical perspectives, resulting from the development of scientific knowledge within the sociology of communication, which enable the description, understanding and explanation of the media phenomena that are present in contemporary societies and the effects that produce them.
The diversity of these theoretical perspectives also focuses on the multidimensionality of the communication phenomena, highlighting its complexity and the need and possibility of its intelligibility.
From its approach, looking for the knowledge acquired by the students themselves may constitute decryption instruments of the processes, organizations and actors related to communicative phenomena.

Teaching methodologies

The following work processes are used in this UC:
Classroom sessions of theoretical and methodological exposure.
Oriented discussion on issues based on text reading.
Collective analysis and interpretation of theoretical and empirical. Information.
Oral communication of the results of different activities.
Individual study based on reading and understanding texts.
Communicate with the teacher and classmates via email.
Use of UC web pages or its interactive platform (Moodle).
Carrying out tasks in digital products and using multimedia: video, digital photos, powerpoint, etc..
Conducting a small group research project.
Conducting a test regarding the contents of the UC.
Individual and group tutorial support.
All this activities or products will be subject to assessment.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The organization of time allocated to this UC is depending from the transmission needs of the respective contents, the analysis and reflection on the themes and monitoring of jobs that will be developed by students.
The activities aim to achieve the goals of UC through the combination of content defined in this program with the interests and experiences of students in relation to communicative phenomena.
Thus, the presentation of different theoretical perspectives integrate their application to reflection and analysis of communicative phenomena in today's world, comprising the students experiences as consumers (and possibly producers as) of the media.
These application exercises of theoretical contents occur in group-class and in small groups, allowing mastery of concepts and theories and their mobilization to construction processes of knowledge applied to some communicative phenomena. This work perspective remains, in the carrying out of a little investigative work, developed independently by students with teacher support.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The final classification of each student will be based on their performance in group and individual works and in accordance with the following:
- The test will contribute 50% to the final classification;
- Group work with 40%;
- Participation in class activities with 10%, which means regular attendance of students in school activities.
In the case of students receiving special statutes and can not ensure a regular presence in class activities the test will contribute 55% to the final classification and group work with 45%.
