Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Master the basic concepts concerning the physical condition and its influence on the promotion of health, well-being and quality of life.
To understand the importance of physical activity in promoting health and physical fitness, identifying the physiological and psychological benefits associated with regular physical activity/exercise training, and health risks related to inactivity.
Know the methods, instruments and procedures for the evaluation of functional ability and physical condition.
Mastering the principles of exercise prescription in order to adapt them to the various levels of motivation and pursuit of sport, revealing skills related to the correct implementation of stress stimuli.
Relate the theoretical concepts acquired with concrete practical situations, characteristics of intervention in sport.

Syllabus

The concepts of health, quality of life, psychological and physical well-being.
The importance of maintaining or acquiring a healthy life style related to the practice of physical activity.
Sedentariness and the health risks of physical inactivity. The physiological and structural changes in a sedentary lifestyle.
Physical activity and exercite training as a vehicle to prevent health risk factors (e.g. obesity, cardiovascular disease, etc).
Benefits associated with regular physical activity and esercise training.
Determinants and components of physical fitness.
Physical fitness assessement: objectives, methods and instruments.
Prescribing and implementing exercise programs.


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

This unit is directed towards the study of the processes associated with maintaining and increasing of physical fitness, and of the impact that they have on health, well-being and quality of life of human beings.
Intend to analyse and document the physiological, biochemical and psychological adaptations to the regular practice of physical exercise, showing forms of intervention to generalise the requirement of exercise and a proper application of stress stimuli according to the level of physical fitness, characteristics and motivations of practitioners.

Teaching methodologies

Discussion in plenary sessions and/or small groups, from the information provided by the teacher or with other materials. Shall include: Reading, discussing and manuscript analysis; Preparation of written works; Oral exposure of different subjects related to exercise training and to physical fitness; Preparation and presentation of practical work.

The Moodle platform enables the realization of theoretical and pratica activities, and the interaction between teacher and student, and between students, and is therefore a tool included used in the assessment.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

At the end of the work the expected skills lie around the following areas:
- Ownership in the field of knowledge of physical fitness and exercise prescription (models and methods of evaluation and promotion of physical activity) in a critical perspective towards continuous updating;

- Mobilize carefully and reasonability, the acquired knowledge of assessment and exercise prescription, considering different contexts, and different populations.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

1. Process evaluation (35%): results from the attendance, participation in classroom activities and realization of 3 worksheets:
- Assiduity 5%
- Worksheets 30%
2. Product evaluation (65%): It is expressed by the student's performance in two written tests and in oral test.
- Test 1: 25%
- Test 1: 30%
- Oral test: 10%
The sum of the weighted values of component 1 and component 2 will define the classification in the CU, assigned on a scale of 0 to 20 values.
Exam
Classifications lower than: 7 in the written tests and 9.5 in final evaluation refer students to the final exam.
NOTE: For students with special regimes the evaluation process may change. Please contact the teacher in the first 15 days.

Attendance system

It is expected that each student be present, at least, in 75% of the lectures.
