Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Understands the foundations of geographical thinking while framing it in space and time
Acknowledges and relates epistemological foundations of Geography relating them to other sciences in the context of the history of science and technology
Identifies and understands the location of different physical and human phenomena
Identifies distribution patterns of physical and human phenomena and their interrelation
Identifies territorial dynamics both from a human as well as from a physical point of view
Relates distribution patterns of phenomena and spatial dynamics at various scales
Knows some of the main location theories of physical and human phenomena and processes
Recognizes and applies theoretical knowledge in the identification of geographical characteristics of space at various scales
Understands the main spatial representation techniques, its limitations and potentialities
Produces simple cartographic outputs and analysis at various scales
Understands and use spatial location instruments and techniques
Identifies in situ the main features of geographical space
Acknowledges the main features of the most relevant instruments of Spatial Planning at the local scale while recognizing the territorial options they entail

• Orlando Ribeiro and Portuguese geography

2. Geography: at the crossroads of sciences
• The Earth as Planet
• Demographic evolution and population distribution

3. Spatial Planning
• Evolution and perspectives of territorial development
• Prospective and territory


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

Geography introduces into the training of ESE students its essential competences as scientific discipline of interdisciplinary nature.
In this context, local and regional spaces are privileged through multiple approaches which, in a discussion, reflection and discovery perspective, are used to address the main theories and understand territorial dynamics.


Mobilizes concepts of other disciplines to discuss geographical issues
Uses and analyses various sources
Masters the essential vocabulary and techniques of Geography
Ensures the domain of essential competences of the discipline

Teaching methodologies

4.1 Program management strategies
The UC program is focused in working groups, autonomously made, under the supervision of the lecturer. History of geography, physical geography and human geography will be subject of practical group works, which should explore in-depth a specific theme previously selected with the support of the lecturer.

4.2 Tutorial follow-up
Tutorial follow-up will be made to group works and may take place face-to-face and/or at distance

4.3. Students participation
Students are expected to actively participate in classes, but also to be able to develop field work according to defined goals in each one of the group works.

The evaluation of the UC includes the following elements:
