Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

This CU will favour a methodology that connects theory and practice, based on research work, whether individual or in group, in order to develop competences of problem-solving, analysis and synthesis. Moreover, this CU intends to develop the students’ critical thinking, creativity and autonomy, which means that the discussion of work, debate, group work and presentation of programmatic themes will constitute preferential strategies.
In order to develop analytical reasoning skills and the appropriation of linguistic description tools, the program contents are organized in a perspective of increasing complexity.

Teaching methodologies

The theoretical-practical sessions can apply varied strategies:
- dialogical exposition of the contents;
- activities of analysis of small corpora;
- practical exercises;
- reading of bibliography that will guide discussion and problem-solving, in the logic of problem-based learning.
The tutorial sessions are designed to support students in their specific difficulties and in the preparation of individual work.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

A methodology that provides the theory / practice relationship, based on research work, both individually and in
groups, is known to favor the development of skills in problem solving, analysis and synthesis as well as critical
thinking, creativity and autonomy.
In practice, these skills will be trained and tested by performing two individual written works (a review / abstract and
a creative writing paper), the realization of a work group on a topic of Portuguese grammar, the guided discussion
of results of this work, some exposition classes on the course topics, a test on the functioning of language and a
final test, for which the relevant and new theoretical knowledge will be called into action.
Throughout all these works, students will be guided in their reflections on human language, and also on the history
and behavior of Portuguese language. The explanation, analysis and discussion of theoretical papers and other
materials will promote the deepening of their knowledge of grammar, particularly of the Portuguese grammar, as
well as develop their critical thinking regarding the different proposals for the analysis of grammatical phenomena.
This knowledge will be activated in the course of the group work as well as to the grammar assignment and the
final test.
Additionally, the organization of their work group, based on relevant bibliography, as well as its presentation and
discussion in class, allows for students to increase their awareness about how mastering the Portuguese language
will have positive effects in their personal, academic and professional lives. Thus, their communication skills, both
for oral and written reception and production, will be simultaneously developed and put to the test throughout the
semester.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The assessment in this CU is continuous and will include the active participation of the students in classroom work and /or homework, both individual or in group.
In order for students to be approved in this CU, through continuous assessment, they must attend at least 75% of the classes. The final mark will be calculated based on the following elements: Group work on a grammar theme (oral presentation) - 40%; Two written short-length tests - 60%.

Attendance system

UC continuous assessment can only be performed by students who attend a minimum of 75% of classes, except for students whose status exempts them from attendance.
