Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

- To acquire basic knowledge essential to the study of Language Sciences;
- To reflect on the specificity of Human language and particular languages;
- To study the main interpretative theories of language acquisition;
- To consider the role of language development in the child's overall development;
- To characterize processes of acquisition and development of verbal language (oral / written; mother tongue / L2, typical / atypical development);
- To relate language, particular languages, literacy, acquistion and learning;
- To plan educational strategies to promote the development of verbal language of children;
- To understand the importance of linguistic awareness in the context of successful reading and writing;
- To discuss the role of educational practices in the process of language acquisition and development.

Syllabus

A. Language, cognition, and communication: the specificity of human language
1. Biological, cognitive and social bases of language acquisition and development.
2. Interpretive theories: the behavioral, generative, cognitivist and socio-cognitivist perspectives.
3. Factors favoring language acquisition and development; acquisition and learning.
4. Research in language acquisition and development (naturalistic methods and experimental methods, transverse corpora and longitudinal corpora, types of scales).
B. Acquisition and development of language
1. Acquisition of phonology
1.1. Acquisition of the sounds of the tongue;
1.2. Acquisition of the syllable;
1.3. Development of phonological awareness and phonological awareness.
2. Acquisition and development of morphology and syntax
2.1. Complexation of syntactic structures;
2.2. Development of morphological knowledge of morphological awareness;
2.3. Development of syntactic knowledge of syntactic awareness;
3. Lexical-semantic development.
4. Discursive and pragmatic development.
5. Bilingualism and acquisition of L2.

Attendance system

Students should attend to at least 75% of classes.
