Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

• To understand and critically apply statistical methods as well as notions of probabilities in analysing and solving reality problems.
• To know the steps of the statistical process and select and use appropriate statistical methods to the data collection and analysis.
• To mobilize the knowledge described in the previous item in the design and analysis of statistical investigations.
• To understand and apply basic concepts of probabilities.
• To use technological tools in organizing and processing data and conducting simulations to estimate probabilities of events.

Syllabus

Statistics:
- General ideas
- Sampling Techniques
- Organizing data in tables and graphs
- Characteristics of samples: measures of central tendency and variation
- Two-dimensional distributions
Probability:
- General ideas
- Probability of an event: Frequencist concept and Laplace's Law.
- Conditional probability: dependent and independent events.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

In the context of information society it is very important to read, interpret and communicate information. To a prospective elementary teachers and prospective kindergarten teachers it is essential: (i) to develop the ability to critically read, interpret and transmit information of statistical nature and solve problems involving situations of uncertainty, (ii) to develop their mathematical knowledge about concepts and processes of organization, analysis and interpretation of data and probabilities, (iii) to be able to communicate to the children this knowledge using a rigorous and accessible language (iv) to increase their ability to read and interpret studies critically that include quantitative methodologies and that contribute to its professional development.

Teaching methodologies

The work to be developed in this CU will focus on active student participation, whether in individual or in group work, looking for the deepening of knowledge related to the topics of the program.
The tutorial support, individual support or group support consists in the orientation and organization of the student study to deepen the themes and answering questions posed by students and can be done in person or distance.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Three levels of expected learning: (a) mobilize fundamental concepts of statistics and probabilities to solve problems; (b) present a critical attitude in the interpretation and development of statistical studies; (c) apply and use critically the acquired knowledge to real life situations. Thus, the activities to be carried out will include: (i) reading and discussion of scientific and technical documents, (ii) exploration and critical analysis of relevant problems, (iii) seek out relevant information for the deepening of the contents of this CU.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The evaluation will be an ongoing process which will include retroactive adjustment moments of individual work and group activities and oral and written expression.

The following evaluation elements will be taken into account: (i) the completion of a written test (60%), (ii) the delivery of activities carried out in class (10%) and (iii) the performance of a group work ( 30%), which corresponds to the preparation of a written report of a statistical investigation in Kindergarten (or in the 1st cycle of basic education).

Attendance system

Students who participate in activities carried out in at least 75% of classes may be included in the continuous assessment system. Students who are unable to integrate into the continuous assessment system will take a final exam.

Students with special statute, in the event that they are unable to attend classes, must negotiate with each teacher (in the first 15 days of classes) the way that will be used for their evaluation, as well as the most convenient timetable.
Students that do not meet continues assessment requirement will have a final exam.
