Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

This is an Optional Unit for two of the Courses in the Institution. The most important aim is to develop the knowledge of the students in three different and related areas: Reading, Libraries and Museums. To put them as a big part of social, artistic and educational work the teachers separate them in six areas: to see, to read, to imagine, to think, to produce, to give the others. The discussion of the most recent discoveries and theories in these areas are the bases of daily classes.
This Unit gives other meanings to what students learn in other areas (i.e. how children learn how to read, the respect for other cultures inheritance), it wants to go further in the areas of the Unit (i.e. how to organize and to use libraries and museums, both real an virtual).
Some activities to be used in libraries or museums are organized and the most important reference is the application of all them to different context and public.

Syllabus

Definition of concepts: Museology, lecture, librarianship, political organization of Culture products and industries.
Definition of cultural policies and ideological basis for reading, libraries and museums.
Types of reading, libraries and museums.
Work and jobs contents related to reading libraries and museums.
Different types of education and the educational services in libraries and museums.


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

In this Unit students are asked to identify, to study and to make projects related to the areas of reading, libraries and museums. They must be prepared to act in those areas and they can imagine and put in action some activities for different publics, in different circumstances and with different cultural aims and backgrounds. They can be able to thing about the questions that cultural authorities have to face in order to give life to libraries and museums existing in the comunities. They can also think about the relations that are established in a comunity between the reading habits, the library and the museum, on one side, and the cultural values, the preservation of a history or a group of informations or activities relevants for the keeping of the cultural memory of a region.

Teaching methodologies

The classes are based on the discussion and the process has five different works: reading, discussion and analysis of documents; observation and comprehension of the principles of museums and libraries and reading events; the construction of small comments and critical essays; two real study visits and other two virtual with the production of a final critical report; the presentation and discussion of the intervention proposal for a museum or a library, for a specific public.
The evaluation is based on different products: the presence in the classes/discussions and the presentation of the daily work done in the classroom + the production – in a small group - of an original intervention proposal for a library or a museum + the identification and the planning of an intervention in a real context (defined by the teachers and produced in the classroom). If necessary,there will be a final test.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

With this optional Unit it is expected that the students – from the two Courses here put alltogether - must be able to identify, to understand and to imagine real product for a real institution, such as a library, a museum or other cultural or museological equipment. In order to achieve this goal they have to read different theories about a same subject, they have to see different proposals of using a same space and they have to be able to produce, in small groups – till 3 elements – a real and original product to be presented to the institution they choose.
