Objectives, competences and learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of:
1. Different types of gait; components of walking aids.
2.Objectives of the positioning of users, protecting the most susceptible parts of the body to skin lesions;
3.Transfer procedures;
4.Importance of the touch, mechanical, physiological and psychological effects of massage; indications and contraindications;
Technical and psychomotor skills to:
- Properly adjust the auxiliary and demonstrate the different types of gait;
- Properly position the user and perform mobility skills in bed;
- Perform transfers;
- Carry out the various massage techniques, respecting all the rules and principles.
Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively:
Use proper language to the user.
Instruct the user/family/caregivers to: properly handle walking aids in different types of gait; about the procedures and precautions to take in transfers.
Main Contents
I. Technical Help: adaptive aids (wheelchair, walker, axillary crutch, crutches, cane, tripod, pyramid, parallel bars, standing-frame, orthoses) and adaptive equipment.
II. March: gait training of users; shuffling gait; semi-pendulous march; pendulum march; march to 4, 3, and 2 dots; modified march to 3 points;
III. Placements: prevention of pressure ulcers in supine, prone, lateral and sitting; anti-bedsore material.
IV. Transfers: safety of users; material support; Australian transfer; classical; 3 carriers; 3/4 carriers; with a carrier. Transfer like "Chair";
V. Massage: hygiene rules; mechanical, physiological and psychological effects of massage; indications and contraindications of massage techniques; traditional massage techniques; positioning of the user/physiotherapist and materials to be used during the massage.
Type of assessment
Pass Standard
For the successful completion of the unit the student must attend 80% of the classes, and complete the theoretical & practical evaluation with at least 9,5/20. In case of failure the student, may repeat the evaluation, with new activities, in exam time (normal or appeal).
