Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
This course aims to enable students to acquire the fundamentals and developing skills to provide nursing care, at
advanced level for children and youth, from birth to age 18 or until the transition to adulthood is achieved in their
family and social context, within the functional content of specialist nurses in nursing child health and pediatrics.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that the student:
- Understand the theoretical framework of Pediatric Nursing;
- Develop a holistic approach to care for the child / youth / family, beneficiary of their care;
- Integrate conceptual model centered on the child and family;
- Recognises the importance of the partnership model of care;
- Discuss critical thinking and nursing care in child health and pediatrics process.

This course constitutes the basis of common understanding of the conceptual framework for this area of expertise,
as recommended in the array of specialties, issued by Order of Nurses.
Responding to goals, it is considered essential:
a) Analyze the perspective of the nursing child health and pediatrics, in light of the evolution of health care as well
as the analysis of the determinants of health that influence health promotion and nursing care to the child / young
person and family, articulating with health policies adopted and their impact on health indicators.
b) Enumerate the principles of nursing child health and pediatrics, systematically referenced studies in this area of
specialization
c) Contextualize the intervention specialist nurse with parental rights and the child / young
d) Applying the process of decision making in nursing, emphasizing critical thinking and reflective analysis.
Teaching methodologies
METHODS OF TEACHING:
Expository and participatory approach, encouraging critical and reflective thinking of students.
Analysis of articles and reference documents.
Group dynamics and analyzing situations.
Orientation tutorial for student support in the monitoring and development of group work and clarify doubts.
Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes
Being a course that aims to be the basis of common understanding to all master in nursing child health and pediatrics, it is considered important to use expository, methodologies able to elucidate the state of the art in
relation to the conceptual framework of specialized care.
Recognizing the potential of each student, as well as optimizing the experience and experienced or narrated
situations, focus is on the use of more active methods, promoting empowerment and critical reflective thinking and
encouraging active and quality participation of each actor.
The analysis of articles, reference documents and situations allow the student to integrate the contributions of the
course, being able to use them before experienced or situations occurring in the context of care.
Based on this earlier, conducting a thematic review article, allows students to consolidate knowledge, synthesize
and articulate the concepts learned and the issues addressed.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY:
Achievement, individually or in small groups, a thematic review article.
Review by exam: individual written test (according to regulation)
