Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

At the end of this course, the students are expected to:
. Identify and describe the main concepts and theoretical approaches about human development;
. Understand and describe the major developmental tasks and milestones across lifespan;
. Understand the interaction between biological, psychological and social dimensions of human development across lifespan;
. Understand the importance of applying developmental psychology knowledge within health interventions.

- Introduction to developmental psychology:
Concepts about human development
Nature versus nurture
Normative and non-normative influences
- Major theoretical approaches on human development
- Infancy:
The newborn and reflex activity
Sensorial and motor development
Cognitive and language development
Psychosocial and emotional development
- The child in preschool years:
Main acquisitions in cognitive and motor development
Psychosocial development: self, relationships with others, gender
- The child at school age:
Main cognitive developments
Psychosocial development
Social perspective taking – Selman’s socio-cognitive theory
- Adolescent years:
Identity construction, self-image and self-esteem
Psychosexual development
Relationships with parents and peers
Cognitive and moral development
- Young and Middle Adulthood:
Main cognitive and psychossocial features and developmental tasks
Erikson’s psychosocial crises

Teaching methodologies

To promote students learning and understanding of theoretical knowledge several teaching methodologies are used in this course, namely expository method, presentation/discussion in small groups, and video watching activities.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

In this course students are exempt from sitting a final exam if they get a minimum grade of 10 on an individual written test.
If students fail in this evaluation, or if they miss it, they have the chance to take a written test in both periods of final exams (100% of final grade).
