Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Seeks to acquire and develop knowledge and skills in the domain of professional, ethical and legal responsibility . It is essential to integrate epistemic, ethical , deontological and legal dimensions, to lead to action. As learning outcomes, it is expected that the student : a) Identify the epistemic, ethical , deontological and legal dimensions, integrated in decision making ; b ) Understand the nature of nursing knowledge; c ) Support the decision on principles , values and ethical standards ; d ) Discuss the fundamentals of decision making and the specific praxis as nurse ; e) Know the legal framework for professional nursing practice; f ) Reflect critically the process and outcomes of decision making; g ) Promote the protection of human and fundamental rights; h ) Integrate knowledge in case analysis; i ) Learn to manage, in the team, on a proper way, practices that can compromise the security, privacy, dignity or rights of the client.

Syllabus

I. Fundamentals of ethical decision making
1 . Epistemic dimension . Sources and patterns of nursing knowledge. Epistemological identity.
2 . Ethical Fundamentals. Ethical principles in health care. Fundamentals of nursing ethics . Ethical decision making : models , methods and uncertainties .
3 . Law related to health care. The Portuguese legal system. The Law of Health and Nursing . The Nurses Professional Regulation. The Nurses Order. Civil, criminal and administrative responsibility for nursing.. Specific legal regimes of professional practice.
4 . Deontological Fundaments . The Deontological Code. Analysis of the Code in the light of people's rights . Relation with the stated position .
II . Discussion of issues and cases at the confluence of several dimensions
Readings and interpretations of problem situations . Development of alternatives. Fundamentals of choices . Evaluation of processes and outcomes .

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

The objectives and expected outcomes of this course will meet the competencies in the professional, ethical and legal responsibility domain (Regulation 122/2011, DR 2nd series, February 18, 2011), considering the units of competence as well as the matrix elements of specialties (OE 2008) concerning the ethical, deontological and legal aspects associated with health care.
Require theoretical construction and reflective discussion, information contained in the syllabus, both in theoretical and critical perspective, either in their discussion centered on issues and cases. The ethical dimension, constituting an essential standard of nursing knowledge, need convergent theoretical studies of epistemology, ethics, deontology and law - so combines the theory and learning ethics and professional conduct case studies and problems and dilemmas, including experienced and narrated by students.

Teaching methodologies

he teaching-learning methodologies includes theoretical exposition, analysis of texts and reflective discussion. Focus on the students and are predominantly active and participatory, with discussion of arguments, defining the problems and search for better alternatives. We will make use of documents, film clips, opinions issued by Nurses Order , National Council of Ethics for the Life Sciences, National Commission for Data Protection and other sources in the area. Include the construction of an ethical and legal records (aka "folder of law").

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The curricular unit aims to prepare students to analyze , discuss , reflect and make informed decisions , considering aspects relating to knowledge, ethics, deontological and legal dimension thus contemplating the formal frame and the existential and human aspects . Thus integrate the various dimensions in view of decision-making and action balanced with construction of complex thought .
An important part of this learning may be more visible in action in clinical settings - however, analyze articles and opinions and discuss specific cases of clinical practice enhance the reflection, the preparation to debate and develop ; where the special role of practical classes . It is recognized knowledge as fundamental , so expository type classes allow present knowledge and debate it , presenting theories and models, pretending the students participation. Knowing , in this sense , means being able to argue , analyze, evaluate and decide .

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The evaluation methodology consists of an individual or in small groups (one to three) work, representing a in-depth review and critique of a topic or a case (as students chooses), encompassing the various dimensions (epistemic, ethical, deontological, legal)
