Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

This course aims to develop the skills to identify, assess and respond appropriately to the health problems of populations, analyzing the epidemiological perspective and looking ahead their contribution to the organization of Health Services
As a result of the learning is expected that the student:
• Meet the epidemiological method and learn to apply it in solving health problems;
• Set the amplitude, distribution and evolution of morbid phenomena in the population;
• Identify factors and risk groups;
• Review the etiological hypotheses of morbid phenomena;
• Analyze and interpret epidemiological information identifying your contribution to the quality and efficiency of health services

Syllabus

Concepts and scope of Epidemiology
• Dynamic and distribution of health and disease in the community and its determinants
• Identification of Health Problems:
• Binomial Health / Disease
• Natural History of Disease
• Levels of Prevention
• Screening and opportunistic detection in clinical practice
• Validity of diagnostic tests
• Sources of information
• Health indicators
• Measures frequency of morbid phenomena
• Incidence and prevalence
• Causality in epidemiology
Epidemiological surveys
• Epidemiological studies
• Effect measures -risk factors and prognosis
• absolute, relative, attributable risk and etiologic fraction
• Methods of standardization -Direct and indirect
• Contribution of epidemiology in the management and evaluation of health care:
• Analysis of epidemiological indicators
• Analysis and design of programs and projects

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

The contents of UC were selected and organized to meet the respective objectives and expected results given the skills profile of specialist nurses in community nursing and public health (Regulation n. 128/2011 DR, 2. Second Paragraph 35 DE18 February 2011) series.
In this sense, the defined syllabus aim to contextualize the student for the epidemiological analysis of health problems, enabling him to perform and cooperate in epidemiological surveillance geodemográfico as envisaged under the above Regulation

Teaching methodologies

The training methodology embodying the educational model adopted for the course calls for the active involvement of the students, individually and in groups, moving from the perception of concepts and situations to their application.
The different contents will be addressed through interactive methodologies in the analysis and reflection allows the acquisition and use of conceptual tools and skills development of the students.
The teaching strategies are based on the lecture method, always valuing interaction through active student participation, theoretical-practices developed through the analysis of data and articles from scientific publications, demographic statistics, health and other data sessions.
The evaluation will be carried out in two stages:
• Individual work focused on the analysis of emerging concepts and situations of theoretical content;
• Group work with presentation and discussion in the classroom, based on the analysis of health indicators in order to participate in processes and epidemiological surveillance systems in order to promote healthy gains.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Considering the student responsible for their learning, the teacher appears as a tool facilitating the same, promoting their active participation in the learning process which justifies develop individual and group work, and that are used as strategies the discussion, the resolution of problems, reading and analysis of scientific texts.
The proposed methodologies aim to stimulate critical reflection on and the reality spirit. Dynamics are still fostered teamwork and demonstration of competence in the subject of the course.
The theoretical exposition and thematic discussions will be used to achieve all objectives

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The proposed methodologies aim to stimulate critical reflection on and the reality spirit. Dynamics are still fostered teamwork and demonstration of competence in the subject of the course.
The theoretical exposition and thematic discussions will be used to achieve all objectives
