Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

A. Explains the historical understanding of the profession course
B. Describe paradigms and schools of thought in nursing, with the specific and distinguishing characteristics
C. Understands the impact of the development of biomedical, social and human sciences in nursing care, an interdisciplinary relationship
D. Analyses the structural elements of nursing as a profession, according to the characteristics of a profession and the historical-political career.
E. Argues regarding the evolution of the practices of care and processes of professional (re) identification.

Syllabus

1.General notions of evolution of the practices of care and nursing.
2. History and Nursing - historical approach, primary and secondary sources. Application of historical methodology in monitoring progress of nursing care.
3. Florence Nightingale - biographical sketch and action
4. Historical perspective and processes of (re) identification.
5. Nursing in Portugal - development and organization of the profession.
6. The organization of the profession in time - characteristics of a profession and professional organizations. Casting characteristics of a profession
7. Aspects of professional regulation - Regulation of the framework of professional nursing practice
8. Nurse profile. Perspectives of the nurse's role in health care team.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

The syllabus were selected and organized to respond to the expected goals of the curricular unit. As evidenced by the objectives, it is intended that the approach of different subjects lead to a reflexive and critical discussion of the syllabus. In this sense the contents provide knowledge of the historical development of the profession and thought in Nursing, contributing to the analysis of structural elements of the profession and to the construction of a critical discussion regarding the evolution of the practice of nursing care, based on a "historical look" about the profession and its identity.
It is understood, therefore, that the contents clearly explicit reflection, discussion and analysis required in the planned objectives for this course.

Teaching methodologies

Expository method using the class participation, work into smaller groups, analysis of texts and role-playing. Invitation to a nurse for tells your life story linking it to the development of Nursing at the time.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

To achieve the expected objectives, methodologies are utilized to encourage the development of the students, based on a continuous work of analysis, reflection and critical questioning of the history of the profession. The teaching-learning methodologies include the theoretical exposition, analysis of texts, role-playing and listening to life stories. In this context, the lectures will be expository and participatory, while the seminar sessions count on the active participation of students and are predominantly active and participatory, with debate, role-playing, discussion, active listening life story and critical questioning and reflection. It is considered that these methods are indicated for achieving the goals set for the curricular unit, because they allow the development of analytical and critical skills, indispensables to understanding the History of Nursing.
