Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

In this curricular unit students have the opportunity to critically review and extend their knowledge of recent research in specific topic of musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice, and develop and critique plans to facilitate the transfer of new knowledge to practice, regarding the particularities of their specific practice setting.

Syllabus

Critical review of recent research in specific topic of musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice; the role of quality improvement models in improving musculoskeletal physiotherapy care/ services; approaches for transferring new knowledge to health care contexts; Developing and evaluating of a plan for integrating new knowledge in clinical practice aimed to enhance patient safety, care efficiency and improve patient satisfaction.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

The contents of this curricular unit are selected to support the development of a quality improvement plan. Based on the characteristics of the students clinical practice setting, students learn and reflect about the quality improvement concepts and approaches and develop a quality improvement plan able to introduce new knowledge/ new model of practice/ new processes in order to improve patient safety/ service efficiency/ patient satisfaction in the context of musculoskeletal physiotherapy care/ service.

Teaching methodologies

Teaching and learning strategies includes lectures, practical classes and individual independent learning under tutorial guidance.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The curricular unit aims to extend student’s knowledge and understanding and ability to reflect on their professional practice in order to identify a topic of interest and design a quality improvement plan able to introduce new knowledge/ new model of practice/ new processes in order to improve patient safety/ service efficiency/ patient satisfaction in the context of musculoskeletal physiotherapy care/ service. During the lectures (quality improvement models and approaches for transferring new knowledge to health care contexts), the dominant teaching and learning methodology used is the exposition method with interaction, complement with collaborative learning through students’ group work. Following these lectures, students are distributed to a tutor, who organized a specific learning programme according to the nature and content of the quality improvement plan. Through tutorials and mentorship, students are encouraged to become increasingly independent learners as they move through their topic and quality improvement plan.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

This curricular unit is assessed through the evaluation of a quality improvement plan concerning the implementation of research evidence on their professional practice (70%) and its oral presentation in a local conference (30%). To complete this curricular unit the students must have a classification of a minimum of 50% in both assignments.
