Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

It is intended that at the end of the UC / student is able to:

1. Focusing the knowledge and perspective of Social Sciences as a desirable feature for good professional performance
2. compare their values with those of others, adopting the principle of cultural relativism;
3. Identify and characterize perceptions and social representations about the body and health phenomena and disease and relate them to health indicators and behaviors;
4. Identify determinants socio-cultural and psychosocial present in health phenomena / disease, namely, gender and social class positions;
5. Apply basic concepts of theories of social cognition to the specific domain

Syllabus

The thematic units of the course will be:

1. Specificity and diversity of knowledge of Social and Human Sciences
2. Socialization, culture, value, belief, social representation, stereotype and ritual concepts
3. Principle of cultural relativism and ethnocentrism concept applied to health field
4. Traditional / lay and bio-medical knowledge
5. Socio-cultural dimension and psychosocial health-disease processes
6. Gender as a social construction: reflection and determining the perception and experience of health and disease
7. The influence of stratification and social background on morbidity and mortality and adherence to therapy
8. Modeling attitudes and behaviors. Approaches to attitude, health locus of control, perceived self-efficacy and action-result concepts
9. Explanatory and predictive theoretical models of health behavior

The approval in this course unit may be obtained through continuous assessment or examination with grade greater than or equal to 10. The rating in both modes, is the realization of a written test is mandatory to obtain an equal or higher classification 9.5.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The final classification of the course corresponds to the marks obtained in individual written assessment test, both in continuous assessment as exam.
