Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
At the end of this curricular units the student must demonstrate:
Knowledge and understanding of the following aspects:
- Knowledge and understanding about range of motion principles, as well as upper and lower limb joint normal range of motion ;
- Knowledge and understanding movement diagrams principles
- Knowledge and understanding about muscle strength assessment principles
Psychomotor skills and techniques :
- passive mobilization, active-assisted and active mobilazation
- Measuring and recording motion using a universal goniometer
- Making movement diagrams;
- Conducting muscle strength assessment and recording
Ability to communicate effectively:
- Inform users regarding assessment procedure and participating requests through clear and precise verbal directions
Syllabus
The program of this course includes the following contents:
I. Mobilization: passive, active-assisted and active in the physiological ranges of the joints.
II. Assessment of range of motion: concepts underlying the evaluation of motion; assessment of range of motion of the upper and lower quadrants - goniometry; registrattion of the assessment of range of motion, motion diagrams.
III. Assessment of muscle strength: the principles inherent in the performance evaluation of muscle strength, muscle strength evaluation of the muscles of the trunk and upper and lower limbs - muscle testing, registration of the assessment of muscular strength
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes
The Measurement Instruments unit aims to develop students’ ability to assess and register range of motion and muscle strength. It is essential to approach theoretical concepts relevant to the understanding of different measurement instruments use in the evaluation of range of motion and muscle strength. This is combined with a simulated practice approach of the contents wchich are organized in order to address the key items that each student will develop and will be taken into account when developing theoretical and practical skills assessment.
Teaching methodologies
The teaching-learning strategies adopted in this curricular unit in a online context use an approach based on the observation of videos which demonstrate the procedures of passive physiological articular movement mobilizations of the upper and lower limb joints; observation of videos demonstrating the range of movement assessment and measurement; also watching videos of the upper and lower limbs muscle strength testing.
Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes
The teaching / learning methodology is student-centered, respecting their individual differences, with active learning main objective. It uses a focused methodology in practice and demonstration of students skills, where video analysis and scenarios simulation are methods used to develop student's ability in the use of different physiotherapy measurement instruments, as well as their communication skills. Throughout practical lessons students have the opportunity to develop their practical skills, establishing the relationship with theoretical concepts underlying the assessment of the different parameters mentioned above. In this context, the individual study is of great importance for learning. It is considered that peer training specificly of responsibilities to the mobilization, assessment of range of motion and muscle strength, developed in practical classes, are critical in the context of this course. The workload set for this CU and the its respective distribution during the semester, expect the student to have time needed to develop theoretical and practical skills underlying the assessment as well as the possibility to consolidate their learning.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
The evaluation of this curricular unit focuses on the assessment of students' practical performance in the thematic areas that integrate the unit (evaluation of range of motion assessment and evaluation of muscle strength assessment). To complete the practical evaluation, the student must be evaluated in both tasks.
On the day of the assessment, the two tasks will be randomly available for each student in the moodle.
The student should make two short videos demonstrating:
1- A range of movement assessment and measurement;
2 - A muscle strength evaluation test.
In each video, the student must demonstrate technical and psychomotor skills, as well as the way he uses his knowledge / understanding and communication in the performance of the procedure targeted. Assessments are carried out in groups of three for goniometry and two for muscle testing.
This curricular unit is exempt from final exam.
To dispense with the final exam, the student must pass and obtain approval (minimum rating of 9.5 points) in each of the videos that constitute the practical evaluation.
In case of failure, the student may repeat the assessment in exam time (normal or appeal).
