Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

This unit occurs throughout two thematic modules: 3- Impact of health and disease on movement, function and social participation, and 4- Assessment and measurement of problems related to movement, function and social participation.
At the end of this unit the students must demonstrate:
- Knowledge and understanding about: ageing consequences on the neuro-muskuloskeletal system; the relation between changes in physiological movements of the vertebral column and its impact on movement and function; principles of first aid;
- Ability to reason clinically regarding: selection of technical aids; clients positioning; clients’ accessibility to public places; selection of outcome measures and respective impact on clinical practice;
- Capacity to communicate effectively: assessment of their own communication skills with simulated clients;
- Critical and independent thought to: analyse the impact of social context and health professionals on the clients’ perception of disability.

Syllabus

The programme includes:
the relationship between the ageing consequences on the neuro-muskuloskeletal system, and respective impact on movement and function;
the relationship between the different factors which contribute to the mobility changes of the vertebral column;
the relationship between technical aids and clients’ position;
patients` accessibility to public places – proposals for adjustment;
outcome measures and the impact of its use in clinical practice;
clinical interview;
first aids principles

Teaching methodologies

Case based learning is used as the core teaching and learning strategy. The cases/professional tasks are the central structure for the competencies to be developed. It involves tutorials in groups of 9 to 11 students, as well as autonomous preparatory work.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

For the successful completion of this unit, the student must attend 80% of the tutorial sessions and must have at least 9,5/20 in each of the following activities:
written essay about the accessibility of people with decreased mobility to public places, considering the architectural and civic barriers (module 3); written essay about the competences to communicate with simulated clients (module 4); and first aid certificate (module 4). The performance during the tutorial sessions is accounted for. When the students do not have success, a new activity is required during exam time (normal or appeal). In these situations, the students hand in only the activities, which evaluate competences that have not yet been demonstrated.
The classification of this unit is calculated based on the classification obtained in each of the following activities:
- module 3 (written work) - 40%;
- module 4 (written work: 30% + first aid certificate: 10%) - 40%
- perfomance on tutorials - 20%

Attendance system

For working students (with registered status) the assessment will consist in:
- module 3 (written work) - 50%;
- module 4 (written work: 90% + first aid certificate: 10%) - 50%
