Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
At the end of the curricular unit, the student must demonstrate:
Knowledge and understanding of the concepts associated to evidence based practice;
Ability to formulate clinical questions and select scientific evidence for its credibility, rigour and adequacy to the questions, from a great diversity of sources;
Ability ot critically analyse research evidence and apply it to practice when adequate;
Ability to critically analyse the role of evidence based practice in the context of physiotherapy;
Ability to develop a document according to academic and scientific criteria.
Syllabus
Decision making in the therapeutic process; sources of knowledge for decision making; professional culture and decision making; EBP concept; clinical effectiveness; primary and secondary studies; systematic literature review; metanalysis; clinical guidelines; types of study which inform EBP; hierarchy and strength of recommendation; formulation of clinical questions – PICO strategy, planning search strategies, practice of advanced search; critical analysis process; randomization; bias, data analysis; validity of results; risk-benefit concept; statistical significance and clinical significance; analysis of the size of the effect.
Teaching methodologies
These may include lectures, group work, presentation and case discussion, literature search.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
Continuous assessment, with an option of final exam. For the successful completion of this unit, the student must have 9.5/20 in the evidence search record (activity 1) and in the individual written test (activity 2).The classification of this unit is calculated based on the classifications obtained in each of the following activities:
Written test (80%)
Evidence search record (20%)
Attendance system
For working students (with registered status) or any other students with special status, special assessment is regulated in the Academic Regulation, approved by the Educational Committe and the Director of the ESS-IPS
