Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
At the end of the curricular unit, the student must demonstrate:
> Understand the importance of the personal and environmental factors in the health and well-being status of the clients, and in the nature and evolution of the musculoskeletal, ortho-traumatologic, rheumatologic and cardiorespiratory most common conditions
> Understand the clinical reasoning processes related with musculoskeletal, ortho-traumatologic, rheumatologic and cardiorespiratory patients problem solving
> Understand the principles of the assessment physiotherapy process including use of effective measures for understanding the problems of the patients with musculoskeletal, ortho-traumatologic, rheumatologic and cardiorespiratory disorders
> Understand the principles of the functional activities assessment process and also the injury risks associated to patient environment (e.g. work place, school activities, hobbies activities, etc)
> Understand the type, the sources, and the analysis of the relevant complementary information for the physiotherapy clinical evaluation and diagnosis
> Understand how to access and analyze relevant clinical information
> Understand the patients needs and define priorities to conduct objective assessment
> Search, collect and analyze relevant information from several credible sources
> Select the appropriate assessment tools regarding the patient clinical condition
> Recognize when referrals are need to be made for other health care providers when the clinical presentations is not consistent with the diagnosis, or further testing and examination is required
> Adequate language and terminology is used and demonstrate a good professional behavior among colleagues and group team members
> Demonstrates effective working relationships with colleagues and team members through the participation of the learning process
> Demonstrates thorough knowledge to establish patients diagnosis with musculoskeletal, ortho-traumatologic, rheumatologic and cardiorespiratory disorders
> Relates the presenting signs, symptoms and pathology / dysfunction with functional activities the and patients needs (e.g. self-care, profession tasks, leisure activities, etc).
> Identifies correctly patients physical problems
> Defines priorities attending the establish relationships between the outcomes obtain during objective assessment
> Interprets adequately the patient diagnostic or clinical problem outcomes
> Identifies relevant aspects from the objective assessment
> Recognize the effect of the assessment outcomes in patient life style, culture, values and attitudes
> Considers the influence of the occupational, social-economics, religious and environment factors in the patients problems and their implications for the intervention plan
> Demonstrates evidence-based knowledge of the determinant factors related with patient clinical evolution
< Use relevant and specific assessment methods according with the initial outcomes and establish short-terms goals to improve the patient condition
Syllabus
This unit aims to promote the development of clinical reasoning, understanding and contextualization of concepts / meanings / perspectives, the construction of sustained meanings and judgments in particular contexts in the area of cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal conditions. It also aims to promote, the problem solving skills, reflection on the decisions taken and their consequences, effective communication skills, time management, interdisciplinary work. This unit is based on the in depth analysis of clinical cases supported by tutorials meetings, which are intended to facilitate the learning process of students and promote collaborative learning through constructive discussions of the following topics:
- Skills development in planning and conducting the clinical evaluation - Subjective Examination.
- Understanding and knowledge about factors that determine the evolution of clinical conditions (clinical factors, psychosocial / behavioral factors and socio-economic factors) and suggest that referral to another health professional.
- Understanding and knowledge about the degrees of severity of soft tissue injury
- Skills development about understanding the initial idea of the clinical problem, the formulation of the clinical hypotheses, as well as, the planning of clinical tests that confirm or not the hypotheses formulated - Objective Examination.
- Skills development about the definition of the diagnosis in physiotherapy and problems identification
- Skills development on defining the objectives of intervention and development an evidence-based physiotherapy intervention plan for cardiorespiratory conditions
- Understanding and knowledge of the musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory pathophysiological processes
Teaching methodologies
To develop the expected competences, will be adopted a case-based learning method that includes group activities which provides tasks analysis and discussion, presentation and discussion of professional tasks encompassed in clinical cases. This component focused on learning around clinical cases is supported by tutorial meetings conducted to facilitate the student learning process and to promote collaborative learning through constructive discussions during analysis of essential topics.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
For approval in this unit, the student must complete successfully (9,5/20) the following activities:
> 2 Clinical Reports based in musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic clinical cases (Module 6)
> 1 Clinical Report based in cardiorespiratory clinical case (Module 7)
> Basic Life Support Exam (Theoretical and Practice) (Module 7)
> Performance in tutorial sessions / meetings (Module 6 and 7)
When the student does not have success in one of the activities, a new activity is required at exam (normal). In this situations the students hand in only the activities which evaluate competences that have not yet been demonstrated.
Regarding only the Clinical Reports (Module 6 and/or Module 7) if the student don't attend at least one of the activities, all activities are required at exam (normal or appeal). This unit activities have the following percentual ponderations:
Module 6
> Each Clinical Report - 40%
> Performance in tutorial sessions / meetings - 20%
Module 7
> Clinical Report - 60%
> Basic Life Support Exam - 20%
> Performance in tutorial sessions / meetings - 20%
The final score results from the arithmetic mean between Module 6 and Module 7.
Attendance system
According to the unit rules, in situations where the student is excused from the tutorial meetings, the final unit score don't consider the Performance in tutorial meetings assessment during the regular exam season and the weighted mean of the remaining activities adjusted to 100% .
