Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
At the end of this course, the students are expected to:
. Understand the developmental features of late adulthood
. Understand population ageing according to worldwide projections
. Understand key concepts related to age and ageing
. Understand and analyze the impact of psychological and social changes related to ageing
. Understand social meanings and attitudes towards ageing and older people
. Understand and analyze physiological changes related to the process of physiologic ageing
. Show knowledge, understanding and ability to select and use validated instruments suitable for the evaluation of senior people
Syllabus
Developmental processes during late adulthood;
Sociodemographic data about the world population;
Age, ageing and old age – conceptual framework;
Psychological and social dimensions of ageing;
Attitudes and social images of ageing;
Physiological changes caused by ageing;
Impact on body functions and structures, activities and social participation;
Instruments for the evaluation of older population’s functional capacity – psychometric aspects.
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes
The learning goals of this course are based on understanding and knowledge attainment related to the fields of geriatrics and gerontology. Its specific contents explore the main features of development during late adulthood and the major theoretical principles and concepts associated to these two disciplines.
Hence this course gives students the possibility to develop knowledge that supports theoretical understanding about the ageing processes and older people considering its applicability to physiotherapy interventions.
Teaching methodologies
Expository method, discussion in large group, analysis of videos and documents and resolution of practical cases in small groups are used to promote the understanding of theoretical concepts.
Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes
The learning goals of this course are based on understanding and knowledge attainment related to theoretical principles and key concepts of geriatrics and gerontology. Consequently, the typology of classes is primarily theoretical and methodologies such as teacher’s exposition and large group discussion, analysis of videos and documents and resolution of practical cases in small groups are used.
Expository method and large group discussion represent two methodologies that can promote student’s learning and reflexion, and improve theoretical understanting about the characteristics of older people and the diversity and complexity of ageing processes as well. These methodologies are complemented with analysis of videos and documents since these activities can present concrete and illustrative examples for the study of students.
Additionally, students have the opportunity to work on practical cases related to ageing in small groups. The main goal of such activity is to promote analysis and discussion with teachers and peers. This way, students are encouraged to analyze and reflect upon specific theoretical contents related to physiological, psychological and social aspects of ageing.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
In this course students are exempt from sitting a final exam if they take an individual written test and get a grade equal to or higher than 10 during the summative evaluation taking place at the end of the module. If students fail in this evaluation, or if they miss it, they have the chance to take an individual written test in both periods of final exams.
The individual written test to be taken either in summative evaluation or final exams comprise a minimum grade of 3,5 in the component of Geriatrics and a minimum grade of 6,5 in the component of Gerontology.
