Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
At the end of this unit the student must demonstrate:
knowledge and understanding of the health promotion and protection concepts, integrating and adjusting them to the physiotherapy areas of competence; understanding of the role of physiotherapy in primary health care/community care, taking into account the respective conceptual and organizational context;
ability to identify possible intervention areas in community physiotherapy for specific population groups in accordance with updates evidence, strategic guidelines present in the National Health Plan and programmes;
knowledge and understanding of the different phases to plan a community project in health promotion; ability to justify these in line with the scientific evidence and good practice recommendation.
Syllabus
Historical perspective of the concepts of Health and Health Promotion -
Interpretation of documents such as the Ottawa Charter, Jakarta Declaration, Bangkok Charter.
Exploration of concepts related to health promotion: (health education, prevention of health, empowerment, health determinants, health gains)
Primary Health Care in Portugal and in the world (Alma Ata declaration) – recent re-structure of primary health care in Portugal
Strategic Guidelines of Programs of the National Health Plan & programmes -
potential interest for the intervention of Physiotherapy in the Community
Methodology of projects in health promotion and understanding of the stages of the planning process;
Teaching methodologies
The theoretical/practical classes are used to facilitate the understanding of the theoretical framework and simultaneous application into practice, in small group work, peer presentation and large group discussion.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
The assessment consists of the written essay (80%), with the respective oral presentation and discussion (20%). The final grade corresponds to the average of these two elements. To be successful the student must have at least 9,5/20 and be present in at least 80% of the lessons. In case of failure, the student may submit a new essay at exam time (normal or appeal)
