Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

• Knowledge and understanding of the various stages of tissue repair and its influence on decisions at the level of clinical practice of physical therapy;
• Knowledge and understanding of the physiological effects of thermotherapy and its clinical applicability;
• Knowledge and understanding of the various forms / techniques of thermotherapy;
• Knowledge and understanding of the physiological mechanisms of pain control and transmission of nociceptive input;
• Knowledge and understanding of the electrical properties of cells and tissues;
• Knowledge and understanding of the properties of different electro-physical modalities and their influence on decisions at the level of clinical practice of physical therapy;
• Knowledge and understanding of the precautions and contraindications to the use of electrotherapy in clinical practice of physical therapy;
• Ability to apply knowledge of bioelectricity to electrotherapy;
• Ability to handle and manipulate the apparatus therapeutic parameters in the simulated clinical setting;
• Knowledge and understanding of the therapeutic effects of diathermy, US, Laser, their application methods and indications / contraindications of these procedures;

Syllabus

Tissue repair; Neurophysiology of pain; Thermotherapy and cryotherapy; Electricity and Bioelectricity; Introduction to electrotherapy; Types of therapeutic electrical currents; Diathermy; Ultrasonotherapy, Laser, Magnetic and shock wave therapy; Clinical applicability of different physical agents and electrotherapy modalities.

Teaching methodologies

A number of different teaching methods are employed during the delivery of Physical Agents and Electrotherapy unit. These include lectures and practical sessions that are supported by student own independent study. Most of the theoretical sessions have associated slide presentations and reading material, which are posted on Moodle e-learning platform. In practical sessions it’s expected that the student take an active role, putting into practice the skills of selection and parameterization of physical agents and electrotherapy modalities.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

Physical Agents and Electrotherapy is assessed through one written test and an interactive practical evaluation. For the successful completion of this unit, the student must have 9.5/20 in each of the assessment activities. The weighting of these components is as follows: Written Test – 40% + Practical exam – 60%. The written test is a 90-minute unseen paper consisting of the content covered over the lectures and the practical evaluation encompasses the selection and parameterization of physical agents and electrotherapy modalities regarding a given clinical case file.

Attendance system

For working students (with registered status) or any other students with special status, assessment is regulated in the Academic Regulation, approved by the Educational Committee and the Director of the ESS-IPS.
