Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

At the end of the curricular unit, the student must demonstrate:
Knowledge and understanding of the principles associated to the definition of the research question, and the justification of the relevance and significance;
Ability to formulate researchable questions and hypothesis and justify its relevance within the existing knowledge within the theme;
Ability to undertake a detailed, relevant and recent revision of the literature which allows a structured reasoning about the pertinence of the study;
Ability to coherently define the methodology in relation to the research question, hypothesis, including also variables, sampling method, sample size and characterization, ethical implications, data collection tools and data analysis methods;
Ability to identify possible bias, as well as the ways to minimize their effects;
Ability to develop a research proposal, according to the norms adopted by the department

Syllabus

Definition of the research question;
Justification of the relevance and significance;
Revision of the literature allowing a structured reasoning about the pertinence of the study
Analysis of published literature;
Definition of the research approach;
Planning of the research methodology
Definition of procedures for: sampling; data collection and data analysis methods

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

This unit had as its main goal to help the students to develop the ability to formulate a research question/hypothesis and respective ways to test that question. Therefore, i tis considered that, more than developing a research proposal, the students must be able to demonstrate the ability to develop and researchable question, putting it into the most updated knowledge, and coherent methodological choices. For this purpose the contents are organized in main themes, in which the students must focus in the development of their proposal.

Teaching methodologies

The teaching and learning methods are student centred, respecting individual diferences, promoting active learning and student decision making. In this context individual study assumes great importance. The planning envolves time for searching, reflection and summarizing their own learning. The following activities are considered fundamental learning approaches: bibliographical search; peer discussion, observation and specific competence training.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The teaching and learning methods are student focused, respecting individual differences, aiming to promote active learning and decision-making. Individual study assumes great importance in this learning approach. The time plan throughout the semester foresees the possibility of the student to have time to search, read, reflects and synthesize. Activities such as bibliographical search, discussion with peers or experienced professionals, observation, specific competence training, are considered crucial for the expected learning outcomes. In addition, the development of the research proposal the student will have lead lectures on the main aspects to be included in the proposal and tutorial support in their specific project.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

For the successful completion of this unit, the student must have 9.5/20 in each of the following activities:

Research proposal, according to the pre-established criteria.

If the student does not reach the above level, a new proposal (new theme) should be submitted as an exam (normal time or appeal) and in this situation there will be no tutorial support.
The classification of this unit corresponds to that obtained in the research proposal presented.

Attendance system

For working students (with registered status) or any other students with special status, special assessment is regulated in the Academic Regulation, approved by the Educational Committe and the Director of the ESS-IPS.
