Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
The objectives of the Unit:
• Explain the concept, typology, action and characteristics of Portuguese and European health systems, and also presenting other international examples.
• Analyse the problems related to the development, financing and current challenges to health systems.
It is expected that students acquire the following skills:
• Understands the concepts of health system, national health service, hospital, groups of health centers, family health units, community care units, personalized care units, public health units, local health unit.
• Differentiates the various components and forms of organization of health systems at a general level and further the Portuguese health system.
Recognizes the systemic nature of the health problem in modern societies.
• Bases the relevance of health professionals, and particularly nurses, in the health system.
• Apply critical thinking.

• The demographic structure and the lack of epidemiological studies - implications for the health system
.Evolution and perspectives: health system versus national health service; public-private partnerships; the multinationals of the medicinal product and equipment for health; social and cooperative sector; the health care system as the country's development factor.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes
The contents are organized so that the student can achieve the results expected for this curricular unit and are linked with each other. So all syllabus meet the main goals of the course. Specifically the syllabus 1.2, 6 and 7 respond to the acquisition of skills related to the main concepts and knowledge about the functioning and organization of health systems and also on aspects relating to its financing. The contents of 3.4, 5 and 7 permit further analysis and aimed at meeting the skills that involve a critical analysis of development and problems of health systems.
Teaching methodologies
Expository-participatory method using the class participation and individual work of the student. Discussion of cases in class.
Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes
The teaching methodology is presented according to the objectives of the course, embodied in the skills to be acquired by students. The participatory-expository teaching methodology, such as case discussions, adopted is appropriate to the objectives established in the course. Also, this teaching methodology allows the contribution of students and the development of skills on critical analysis. The selected methodologies enable students to analyse and discuss the health policies and the intervention of health professionals.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
According to the essential objectives of the curricular unit, the assessment of the acquisition of skills will be based on completion of a written test.
