Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- The clinical aspects and pathophysiology of major heart and respiratory diseases / conditions in which the physiotherapist acts in the clinical practice;
- Epidemiology, prognosis and progression of major heart and respiratory diseases / conditions in which the physiotherapist acts in the clinical practice;
- The main exams and diagnostic techniques used in pulmonology and cardiology;
- The most common forms of medical and surgical intervention in major heart and respiratory diseases / conditions in which the physiotherapist acts in the clinical practice.

Syllabus

. Introduction to Respiratory Pathophysiology:
. Airway Pathology: Bronchial Asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis
. Restrictive disorders: Obesity hypoventilation syndrome, Pathology Chest Wall and Diaphragm, Pleura Pathology, Pathology of interstitial
. Pathology of the parenchyma: Pneumonia, Lung Abscess, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Lung Cancer.
. Circulatory Pulmonary Pathology (Pulmonary hypertension, cor pulmonale, pulmonary embolism)
. Respiratory Failure (Partial / Global, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis)
. Cardiovascular diseases
. Cardiac function and main changes
. Coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and angina pectoris)
. Nonischemic heart disease (heart failure, valvular heart disease, pulmonale, atrial fibrillation)
. Cardiac surgery

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

In this unit students must develop specific knowledge of the clinical and pathophysiological conditions, of epidemiology, prognosis and evolution, and of the main diagnostic and medical-surgical intervention techniques and procedures in each of the most common cardiac and respiratory conditions for the intervention physiotherapist and identified in the unit's syllabus. It is also intended to demonstrate understanding of the same contents, appropriate to the practice of the physiotherapist, ensuring consistency between these and the learning outcomes.

Teaching methodologies

The expository methodologies, associated to the group discussion and focused on the development of knowledge of the most common cardiac and respiratory pathologies for the physiotherapist practice.
Since the teaching / learning methodology is student-centered, the distribution of the course hours provides that there are conditions for autonomous development, respecting the individual differences of the students.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Expositive methodology, centered on knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts and principles, complemented with sessions of discussion and use of other resources (eg videos), will promote the learning and understanding of the contents identified. The hours of the Course and its distribution throughout the module provide students the necessary time to develop knowledge and understanding regarding the most common cardiac and respiratory pathologies and the recommendations for medical and surgical intervention, both autonomously and accompanied by teachers in the classroom.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

This Course Unit does not require a final exam. So, student must complete and obtain approval (minimum score of 9.5) in the following evaluation activity:
. Theoretical assessment, centered on the assessment of knowledge of cardiac and respiratory pathologies worked during the theoretical classes.

In exam, students perform a new assessment activity with similar characteristics.
The final classification of the Curricular Unit corresponds to the classification obtained in the individual written assessment test.

Attendance system

The attendance regime respects the rules contained in the ESS-IPS academic regulation.
