Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about pain neurophysiological mechanisms and pain clinical sign
> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about training methodology: biological and methodological principles of physical exercise
> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about supercompensation theory and its implications for exercise prescription
> Demonstrates capabilities to plan a propioceptive, strengthening and stretching exercise programs for musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic patients.
> Demonstrates capabilities to implement proprioception, strength and stretching assessment methodologies for musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic patients.
> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about the management strategies for patients with musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic disorders
> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about theoretical principles of the physiological mechanisms of the distinct management strategies for patients with musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic disorders
> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about the indications, contraindications, risks and precautions of the distinct physiotherapy management strategies in patients with musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic disorders
> Demonstrates knowledge and understanding about the factors that could influence the physiotherapy management effectiveness in patients with musculoskeletal and ortho-traumatologic disorders
> Demonstrates capabilities to suggest and select management evidence-based strategies in adequate manner regarding individual patient characteristics and clinical problems.
> Apply safely and effectively management technics
> Demonstrates effective time management technics
> Demonstrates appropriately and safe use of equipment and materials necessary for the application of intervention strategies
> Demonstrates capabilities to made treatment modifications to reflect changes in patients health status
> Adequate language and terminology is used and demonstrate a good professional behavior among colleagues and group team members

Syllabus

> Pain: alert systems - acute pain vs chronic pain
> Neurophysiologic Mechanisms and nociceptive, neuropathic and central pain clinical sins
> Classification, Objectives and Physiologic Mechanisms of taping techniques
> Description of the used equipments and materials, application principles and main taping components
> Indications and contraindications in taping techniques applications
> Demonstration and application of taping techniques in the most common upper and lower limb dysfunctions
> Training methodology: biological and methodological principles of physical exercise
> Supercompensation: theory and implications for exercise prescriptions
> Exercise programs: proprioception, strength and stretching

Teaching methodologies

Theoretical classes focused in knowledge and understanding of the theoretical concepts and principles, using predominantly the expositive lecture method, supplemented by group discussion sessions and the use of other resources (e.g. videos) that promote learning and understanding of theoretical concepts.

Simulated practice classes or theoretical-practice classes focused on the acquisition of technical competences/skills (learn how to make and demonstrates how it´s done). Simulated practice is the training component in which students develop skills in the use of physiotherapy assessment tools and management techniques.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

For approval in this unit, the student must complete successfully (9,5/20) the following activities:

> Practical application of taping techniques
> Individual written assessment test

When the student does not have success in one of the activities, a new activity is required at the exam (normal). In this situations, the students hand in only the activities which evaluate competencies that have not yet been demonstrated.

In the simulated practice classes, the student can not exceed 20% of presence fouls. This unit activities have the following percentual ponderations:

> Practical application of taping techniques (40%)
> Individual written assessment test regarding the application of taping technics (20%)
> Individual written assessment test regarding concepts concerning training methodology, and planning and structuring of proprioception, strength and flexibility exercise training programs (40%)
