Syllabus•Basic and Applied Exercise Physiology
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomesThe curricular unit aims to introduce the students to basic exercise physiology and principles of training which will enable them to understand the theoretical principles and methodologies involved in planning and prescribing exercise programmes for specific patients’ needs. Considering this aim, basic concepts of exercise physiology, key factors affecting the response to cardiorespiratory, muscular, flexibility and neuromotor exercise prescription, are addressed. The syllabus is organized to ensure that students achieve the competences related to health-related physical fitness tests selection and interpretation, and with the planning and prescription of evidence-based exercise programmes for patients with different clinical conditions. Teaching methodologiesSeveral teaching methods are employed during the delivery of Testing and Prescription of Therapeutic Exercise unit. Most of the theoretical sessions have associated slide presentations and reading material, which are posted on Moodle e-learning platform. In practical sessions students are expected to take an active role, putting into practice the skills related to the health-related physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Students will plan exercise programmes for patients with different clinical conditions, developing expertise regarding therapeutic exercise prescription Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomesIn this unit, a student-centred methodology that aims to respect individual differences and to promote student active participation in the learning process is applied. Preparatory class reading and independent study is strongly recommended. The student has the opportunity to attend theoretical classes focused on the major themes that support the development of skills related to health-related physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. In practical sessions students select and interpret health-related physical fitness tests and design exercise programmes for patients with different clinical conditions. It is expected the students to take an active role in all practical sessions, putting into practice the skills that they are learning. The syllabus structure provides students´ with the needed time to develop all the skills and the ability to consolidate their learning. Assessment methodologies and evidencesThis unit is assessed through a written test (100%) that is a 90-minute unseen paper consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. For the successful completion of this unit, the student must have 9.5/20 in each of the mentioned assessment activities. BibliografiaKenney WL, Wilmore, J & Costill, D. (2015).
