Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
At the end of this unit the student should demonstrate,
Knowledge and understanding of the following aspects:
- the physical and chemical properties of the water, and the laws of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics;
- the physiological effects of immersion and exercise in water at different temperatures, depths and positions;
- the benefits, precautions and contra-indications of hydrotherapy;
- the different types of muscular efforts in the aquatic environment;
- the principles that support the Halliwick method
Ability to:
- select the appropriate methods and techniques to the patient disease/ problem, identifying possible contra-indications or precautions;
- plan and implement exercises/ movements to increase range of motion, stretching, strengthening and relaxation, using the physical properties of water, specific methods and/ or suitable materials;
- apply the diagonals of the method "Bad Ragaz Ring";
- apply the 10 points of the Halliwick method;
- identify and implement safety standards and evacuation/ emergency in the aquatic environment.
Syllabus
1) Hydrotherapy: the physical and chemical effects of the aquatic environment in the human body;
2) Clinical areas in the aquatic environment;
3) The role of the physiotherapist in different clinical settings;
4) Handling of patients in the pool, transfers, methods and techniques used in water by the physiotherapist;
5) The scientific evidence of hydrotherapy.
Teaching methodologies
In the lectures are used methods such as, the expositive method, the presentation/ discussion of photos or films, and the discussion of group activities. Simulation is also used in practical sessions.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
For approval in the unit, the student must not exceed in 20% the faults in practicals and complete successfully (with a grade > 9,5/20) the following activities:
- written examination (40% of the unit grade);
- practical assessment (60%).
In the exam the student should perform both activities: - written examination, and - practical assessment.
