Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

At the end of the course, students should demonstrate:
. Knowledge and understanding of the evaluation and treatment techniques used in the Intensive Care Units (ICU), in the specific intervention with patients under NIV, submitted to thoracic and abdominal surgery or associated with CRP and PRP.
. Principles and modalities of Invasive and Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation (IMV and NIMV)
. Principles and structure of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs (CRP and PRP)
. Level of evidence and degree of recommendation of intervention procedures mentioned
Clinical Reasoning Capability for:
. Operate in the contexts referred to
. Select assessment and intervention procedures and instruments, including manual and instrumental techniques and appropriate to the mentioned contexts
Technical and Psychomotor Capacity for:
. Use the different types of evaluation and intervention procedures and instruments.
. Communicate effectively with patients, caregivers and colleagues or other professionals, in individual intervention or in a group context or in a multidisciplinary team.

Syllabus

• evaluation of patients with cardiac and / or respiratory dysfunction (subjective examination, objective, tests and specific measures) in the context of ICU, NIMV and integrated in CRP and PRP
• the main techniques for intervention in cardiac and respiratory dysfunctions used in the specific contexts mentioned (manual and instrumental airway clearance techniques, nebulization aerosol therapy, chest mobilization techniques, respiratory muscle strengthening, pulmonary expansion techniques, techniques for improving the Transport of oxygen, to reduce dyspnoea and stretching techniques of respiratory muscles).
• Specific training planning of muscular and aerobic resistance in the referred contexts
• Critically identify the best and latest evidence supporting the practice of physiotherapy in each of the identified themes / contexts.

Teaching methodologies

Theoretical lectures will be used, as well as presentation and discussion or photographs and films, group discussions and other activities. The peer simulated practice will be used in classes but also classes in the real practice context.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

For the successful completion of this unit, the student must reach 9.5/20 in each of the following activities:

Group Work
Individual practical evaluation

In case of unsuccessful performance in any of the activities, the student may complete them in the exam (normal or appeal). Only those who were not successful.
If the student did not hand in one of the activities, then he/she needs to hand ALL the activities of that module in Exam time.
The classification of this unit is calculated based on the weighed mean classifications obtained in each of the following activities:

Group work - 40%
Practical Evaluation (simulated) - 60%

In exam time (normal or appeal), the final classification will obey the following principle:
a. the activities which in term time were group activities, will have to be done individually.

Attendance system

For working students (with registered status) or any other students with special status, special assessment is regulated in the Academic Regulation, approved by the Educational Committe and the Director of the ESS-IPS.
