Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
To characterize and select measuring and monitoring devices. To assess measuring systems. To define and implement acceptance sampling techniques based on international standards. Select and use tools and techniques for process and product control and improvement. Undertake process capability studies.
Syllabus
1. Measurement systems: Characterization and Selection of measuring and monitoring devices; Measurement errors and uncertainties; Analysis of calibration certificates; Repeatability and Reproducibility studies; Measurement systems capability analysis. 2. Acceptance Sampling: Advantages and limitations of sampling procedures; Types of sampling procedures; Producer and Consumer risks; Characteristic curves; Sampling procedures based on international standards. 3. Process and Product control and improvement: Tools for process and product characterization, analysis, and statistical control; Control charts for variables and attributes: implementing procedure and interpretation; Process capability analysis.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes
1– Measurement systems Characterization and selection of measuring and monitoring devices; Undertake repeatability and reproducibility studies; Assess measuring systems in real life settings.
2- Acceptance Sampling To define and use sampling procedures based on international standards in real life settings.
3- Process and Product control and improvement Assure the control and quality improvement of process and product in real life problems by using appropriate tools and techniques, namely control charts and other tools; Undertake process capability studies.
Teaching methodologies
Expositive method in addition to autonomous student work based on exercises and laboratory works, using measuring and monitoring devices, data analysis based on commercial and free software packages, as well as research works based on scientific literature (available through B-On plataform).
Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes
Expositive method in addition to autonomous student work based on exercises, laboratory works using measuring and monitoring devices, data analysis based on commercial and free software packages, and research works supported by scientific literature. Seminars or visits to industrial organizations are also a complement to the expositive method. This practice will leverage the student abilities to characterize and select measuring and monitoring devices, assess measuring systems in real life settings as well as to define and use sampling procedures based on international standards. Moreover, he/she will be able to assure the control and quality improvement of process and product in real life problems by using appropriate tools and techniques, namely control charts, and undertake process capability studies.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
Regular/continuous assessment: 3 working Laboratories + 3 written tests.
The score in each laboratory work and test must be equal or higher than 10. The final score is obtained as follows: 0,2(mean of the working laboratory scores) + 0,8 (mean of the test scores)
Assessment by Exame:
The score in the exam must be equal or higher than 10.
To undertake a research work so as to increase the final score is a student option. In this case, the final score is obtained as follows:
1) Regular/Continuous Assessment: 0,2(mean of working laboratory scores) + 0,5(mean of test scores) + 0,3(research work score).
2) Assessment by Exame
0,7(exam score) + 0,30(research work score).
An oral test is required when the final score is higher than 17.
