Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
Under the basic scientific training, give the student a broad view of the fundamentals of Chemistry, essential to understanding of matters such as industrial processes, mass and enthalpy balances, materials and corrosion.
Syllabus
-Atomic Structure and Periodic Properties
Atomic orbitals, quantum numbers, electronic configurations. Periodic Table and periodic variation of the atomic radius, ionization energy, electro-affinity and electronegativity.
-Chemical Bonding
Lewis notation, resonance hybrids, octet rule. Types of chemical bonding. Molecular geometries. Dipole moments of bonding and resulting dipole moment, polarity of the molecule.
-Stoichiometric Calculations and Concentration of Solutions
Relative atomic mass, mole, molar mass. Balancing chemical equations. Stoichiometric calculations. Limiting reagent and reaction yield. Reagents / gaseous products: Perfect gas law.
Units of concentration of solutions (molarity and mass percentage).
-Chemical equilibrium
Equilibrium constant and reaction quotient. Le Châtelier principle.
-Thermodynamic Chemistry
1st Law of Thermodynamics. Enthalpy. Endothermic and exothermic reactions. Hess' Law. Entropy. 2nd Law of thermodynamics. Gibbs energy and spontaneity of reactions. 3rd Law of Thermodynamics. Gibbs energy and chemical equilibrium.
-Acid-Base equilibrium
Acids and bases. pH scale. Self-ionization of water, Kw and amphoterism. Acid and base strength, Ka and Kb. Determination of pH of solutions of acids and bases (strong and weak).
-Oxidation-reduction and Electrochemistry
Oxidation numbers. Balancing redox reactions. Galvanic and electrolytic cells. Reference electrode and standard reduction potentials. Determination of the potential difference of the cell.
Teaching methodologies
The classes have theoretical-practical typology, aiming at the operationalization of concepts. Participative and interactive method is adopted. It is intended to lead students to draw conclusions, guiding them in this process.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
The student can choose for continuous evaluation or exam:
1. If you wish to be evaluated by exam, you obtain approval if you have a grade of 9.5 or higher.
2. If you choose continuous assessment, you will perform two tests throughout the semester:
1st test: 12/11/2018 (Monday, during class time)
2nd test: 21/1/2019 (Monday, during class time)
In order to pass, you must have a grade of 8.5 or higher in each test and an average of more than 9.5 val. in both tests.
If you get a grade of 8.5 or higher in the first test, you will be able to recover the evaluation of the 2nd test on the date of exam.
Attendance system
VERY IMPORTANT: To carry out the CU in continuous evaluation, the Student must have a minimum frequency of 75% of classes.

Observations
-Clarification of Doubts (F205): Monday, 12:30; Wednesday, 1 pm; Friday, 10:30 am
IMPORTANT: Students who wish to clarify doubts on a given day, should send an email to the Responsible Teacher (carla.gamelas@estsetubal.ips.pt) until the previous business day, indicating this intention.
-The materials of support (slides and tokens of exercises) are in Moodle.
-It is compulsory to register for the evaluation tests within the established deadlines.
-The use of mobile phones during classes and evaluation tests is prohibited.
-The students with the status of Worker-Student, Athlete of High Competition, Association Leader or students under the Freedom of Religion Law should send an e-mail to the Responsible Teacher (carla.gamelas@estsetubal.ips.pt) to the second semester of the semester, in order to present their relevant specificities, in accordance with their respective diplomas.
-Students wishing to consult the evaluation tests (tests or exams) should send an email to the Responsible Teacher (carla.gamelas@estsetubal.ips.pt), until one week before the next test, expressing the intention to exercise this right.
