Syllabus
1 - Innovation Management
Introduction and basic concepts. Innovation process/ models. Sources and threats to innovation. Spread of innovation.
2 - The Innovative Organization
Innovation opportunities. Innovation and Competitiveness. Innovation Process. Features and Routines of Innovative Organizations. Innovation and the organizational structure. New organizational models. Certification of P&DI
3 - Strategies for Innovation
Innovation strategies. Different typologies.
4 - The Entrepreneurial Activity
Conceptualization and terminology. The social and economic importance of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship and economic growth. Creativity, innovation and technology and its relation to entrepreneurship. Characterization of entrepreneurship in Portugal and overseas. The profile, skills and motivations of an entrepreneur. Factors of success and failure in the entrepreneurial activity. Types of entrepreneurship.
5 - The entrepreneurial process: from idea to practice.
Analysis of the idea and business promoters’ potential. Analysis of external constraints. Definition of competitive strategy and marketing strategy. The sources of funding. Typologies of business (New Enterprise, Spin-Off, Franchising). The risk management. The importance of personal and professional networks. Public policies and support structures for entrepreneurship: examples of national and local policies and practices.
6 - The implementation of the project
How to build a Business Plan: Summary; presentation of the company, analysis of product or service, market analysis (competition), the marketing plan, operations plan, financial plan and funding; how to present a business plan to investors.
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes
The topics of the program were selected in order to provide a deep understanding of the innovation process and its importance in the competitiveness of organizations (points 1 to 3) and the entrepreneurial process, as a holistic process (points 4-6) and potential effects on economic development. The organization of the syllabus will allow the acquisition of skills in a coherent way. All concepts and techniques are supported by case studies in order to illustrate the different aspects of the program/syllabus.
Learning attitudes and personal qualities, including active participation in class and information sharing, as well as a sense of responsibility and interest in self-learning will provide an adequate alignment between the contents and the objectives of the curricular unit.

Assessment methodologies and evidences
This is a theoretical-practical curricular unit, based on the study and understanding along with the discussion of different issues / cases. A range of different topics / cases are given to a group of students, who will analyze and discuss them. This course involves a hands-on activity that includes the preparation of a business plan and the creation of a virtual company, tasks that will require intense work throughout the trimester. Moreover, some of the topics covered by this course will be presented in seminars, where students will be asked to participate actively and to take responsibility for their own organization.
In terms of knowledge, students will be assessed by: continuous evaluation and final exam.
The assessment by final exam does not include any element of continuous evaluation and is intended for students who have preferred this option to continuous assessment as well as students who want to improve their grade after concluding their continuous evaluation (can be positive or negative).
Continuous evaluation, which requires regular attendance and class preparation, consists of: (1) a test conducted in class (40% of the final grade), (2) resolution and presentation of a case/ group work (20% of the final grade in each part) and (3) a final group work (40% of final grade).
