By the end of this course students should be able to:
- Understand the fundamentals of business management;
- Understanding the nature and functioning of organizations as socio-economic systems;
- Understand the responsibilities and roles of the manager;
- Understand the environment of organizations;
- Know and understand the components of the management cycle;
- Know how to characterize the different functional areas of management;
- Analyze the main concepts and theories within the functions of the management process;
- Conduct topic and case analysis to apply theoretical concepts.

The syllabus matches the first seven objectives of the course. A research project will help students to conduct topic and case analysis.

Metodologias de ensino

The course will consist of lectures, solving of practical exercises and a research project.
Students are encouraged to ask questions. Students may work in teams to give deeper meaning to the exercises solved in class.

Theoretical classes will expose students to course contents.
Case analysis and practical exercises provide an opportunity for knowledge consolidation and the development of skills through learning-by-doing.

Metodologia e provas de avaliação

A. Continuous assessment

Continuous assessment includes 2 tests and a research project.
(If the candidate fails the continuous assessment, he/she will be required to go to examination in the Resits).


1. Written Tests – 2x30%
2. Research Project – 40%

In the form of a written report and optional class presentation.


Resit (for those students who fail in continuous assessment):
Individual written exam -100%
