Portuguese language and literature in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

This curricular unit’s fundamental objectives are to develop and consolidate the knowledge about teaching of Portuguese by the future teacher of the 1st CEB, to assume language as a medium for all school learning, and to develop students’ pleasure in reading literary, non literary and multimodal texts.
Therefore, the syllabus focus on key topics about the development of oracy, the introduction to reading and writing and its development, including diverse textual genres, and the development of language awareness as key factor for linguistic success and therefore school and personal success.

The theoretical component will target the presentation, development and structuring of syllabus content. It will be coordinated with the analysis of curriculum materials for learning the Portuguese language and literature in primary school.

Teaching methodologies

The lessons of this course will embrace the seminar dynamics, with lectures, text, article and other curriculum materials analysis and discussion aiming at systematic joint conclusions.

The methodology will foster relations between theory and practice. The background concern will be the development of skills of problem solving, analysis and synthesis, critical thinking, creativity and autonomy. So preferred strategies will be oriented research, discussion, group work and presentation of syllabus’ topics.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Planned learning is located at four levels: (i) properly use the current curriculum guidelines for the teaching of Portuguese in the 1st CEB (Programs and Curriculum Goals); (ii) mobilize the Portuguese didactic concepts, fundamental to delineate meaningful contexts for learning the language in the 1st CEB; (iii) present a critical attitude based on the interpretation and analysis of texts and episodes worked in the curricular unit; (iv) use carefully and critically the acquired knowledge.

Students shall master and mobilize basic concepts the teaching of Portuguese as well as other scientific areas upstream. Thus, the activities to be undertaken in this course include: (i) reading and discussion of articles focused on teaching and learning the Portuguese language and literature in the 1st CEB; (ii) exploration and critical analysis of Portuguese language tasks; (iii) exploration and critical analysis of curriculum materials.

Students must demonstrate competence in (i) original writing; (ii) oral and informed discussion; (iii) critical reading and (iv) oriented research.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The evaluation will include the following elements:

plafication of a 3 didatic class (S1+S2);
2 individual critical reflection (S1+S2)
