Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

At the end of this CU the students should:
a. Know the main predisposing factors for pain and disability in musculoskeletal conditions
b. Know the individual and social impact of pain and disability in the context of musculoskeletal conditions
c. Know behavioral change strategies for pain and disability self-management in musculoskeletal conditions
d. Recognize the role of different health professionals for supporting the development of skills for self-management in the context of musculoskeletal conditions
e. Recognize the importance of communication and interdisciplinary cooperation for achieving effective interventions focusing on the promotion of self-management and behavioral change in musculoskeletal conditions
f. Know and understand the clinical practice recommendations for the intervention in musculoskeletal conditions
g. Develop skills to effectively implement self-management and behavioural change interventions in the context of musculoskeletal conditions

Syllabus

Predisposing factors for pain and disability in musculoskeletal conditions
Individual and social impact of pain and disability in musculoskeletal conditions
Theories and strategies of behavioral change for self-management of pain and disability in musculoskeletal conditions
Strategies of cooperative work and effective communication in multidisciplinary teams
Clinical practice recommendations for the intervention in musculoskeletal conditions
Effective stragtegies for promotion of behavioral change and self-management in musculoskeletal conditions

Teaching methodologies

To achieve the learning outcomes, the theoretical and practical dimensions are valued and articulated. The theoretical dimension is focused on the acquisition and consolidation of knowledge, understanding and reflection on disability and pain, and on intervention strategies that promote behavioral change, as well as on the desirable performance of health professionals. Therefore, expositive, and participative methodologies will be privileged.
The practical dimension is focused on the development of skills to plan and/or develop activities aimed for promoting patients’ self-management. Participatory and active methodologies will be adopted, in the form of simulations, individual and group reflections.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The expositive lessons (T) ensure the exploration of the essential concepts and theoretical-practical lessons (TP) promote the effective development of skills. The tutorial classes (OT), using group work strategies and the provision of theoretical support and tools for critical analysis, encourage reflection necessary for understanding self-management of pain and disability in musculoskeletal conditions.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

Continuous assessment:
Group work: a written work concerning the identification of barriers and facilitators to change a given target behavior in people with a specific musculoskeletal condition (60%).
Individual work: carrying out a simulation that shows skills to effectively implement a self-management and behavioural change intervention in the target population of the written work (40%).
To complete the CU with success, the students must obtain a minimum grade of 9.5 in each assessment activity.

Assessment by examination:
Individual work: a written work concerning the identification of barriers and facilitators to change a given target behavior in people with a specific musculoskeletal condition (60%) and a simulation that shows skills to effectively implement a self-management and behavioural change intervention in the target population of the written work (40%).
To complete the CU with success, the students must obtain a minimum grade of 9.5.

Attendance system

The provisions of the Regulation for Academic Activities of IPS and the Specific Regulation of ESS/IPS are applied.
