Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
After successfully completing the Transducers course, students should understand and describe the operation of a chain of measurement as well as the fundamental principles of the operation of transducers used in measuring physical quantities such as position, velocity, acceleration and deformation. They should also specify transducers and design systems for measuring the physical quantities.
Syllabus
1. Introduction to industrial processes; automatic control system.
2. Measurement instrument - Generic constitution. Electrical measurement chain.
3. Static characteristics of transducers; errors of measurement systems and instruments; absolute errors, relative errors, systematic errors and random errors; sources of errors; notions of uncertainty, dispersion, accuracy, class of accuracy; calibration.
4. Measurement circuits: basic concepts on electrical circuits, voltage divider circuit and Wheatstone bridge. Basic concepts of electromagnetism applied in Instrumentation.
5. Position, velocity, acceleration and deformation transducers. Linear and angular potentiometer. Linear variation transformer (LVDT), linear variation capacitor (LVDC); extensometer.
Teaching methodologies
Theoretical-Practical classes consisting of:
- Exposition of the subject and critical reflection through the debate with the students.
- Case studies and implementation exercises.
Laboratory classes consisting of:
-Realization of experimental works;
-Use of transducer devices studied in the curricular unit.
The assessment is based on:
-Realization of two evaluation tests or final exam.
-Realization of laboratory work with report delivery.
Assessment methodologies and evidences
The assessment is based on:
-Realization of two evaluation tests or final exam (70%).
-Realization of laboratory work with report delivery (20%)
-Evaluation in the context of the classroom (10%).
Average of the tests or final exam grade should be higher than 9.5.
