Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

The objective is to develop students’ knowledge of English in several areas, such as reading comprehension, writing, correct use of technical terms, grammar, fluency and personal interaction. Students will be acquainted with concepts and procedures used in the workplace, and will be able to apply technical language to specific contexts.

Syllabus

1. Diagnostic test
 The aim is to assess the global level of English of the classroom, in order to overcome any difficulties presented by students.

2. English for the workplace
 CVs and covering letters
 E-mail writing
 Telephoning
 Negotiations and exchange of ideas (meetings, presentations)
 Work procedures (technical procedures, health and safety, processes, quality)
 Problem-solving strategies
3. English in the context of the new technologies
 Reading comprehension of updated texts concerning new emerging technologies/innovation
 Debate and discussion of these topics
4. English grammar review
 The review of these several grammar issues will be done throughout the course: verb tenses, interrogatives, if clauses, passive voice, reported speech.
5. Technical English vocabulary
 Acquisition of specific technical vocabulary related to the area of the course.
6. Project
 Development of a group work about a technical topic related to each specific course. (The maximum number of students per group should be 3).

Technical English aims at developing both soft skills and technical vocabulary acquisition within a professional framework.

Teaching methodologies

Diversified teaching strategies that comprehend active learning/task-based learning.

In the classroom students will be assigned a variety of activities that include:
-pair work
-reading comprehension
-technical vocabulary acquisition
- grammar practice
-fluency /communication
- listening
-brainstorming

Assessment methodologies and evidences

Continuous assessment with final exam (for students who score below 9,5).

-Two evaluation tests (60%)
- Project: group work of maximum of 3 students concerning a technical topic related to the course (40%)

Important observations:

Project submissions will not be allowed in the exam season. Therefore the group project should be submitted and presented in class during the first semester.

In terms of final assessment, and in conformity with the continuous assessment framework, the mark of the project will also be taken into account in the exam:
Exam (60%) Project (40%)

Attendance system

Limit of absences: No more than 15% of total class time
