Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Understanding the sociocultural diversity that characterizes contemporary societies, as well as their causes and implications in education.
Addressing education as a social problem in permanent reconfiguration.
To know and question the new educational reality of linguistic diversity and composite culture.
Know different educational, social and political approaches to cultural diversity.
Know the conditions necessary to establish an intercultural educational project.
Contribute to appropriate reflection and intervention practices, within the framework of Portuguese legislation and international guidelines.
To meet national and international institutions and organizations that work in Intercultural Education.
Knowing contributions of national and international research in this field.
Valuing interculturalism as a means to promote tolerance and active citizenship.

Syllabus

Cultural diversity: contributions to an explanation of the concept.
Multiculturalism: contributions to an explanation of the concept.
Cultural diversity and implications:
- in the social and political field
- in the field of education
Intercultural education: concept and practices.


Teaching methodologies

The methodology will include sessions: (i) of expository type; (Ii) analytical work on the implications of cultural and linguistic diversity in the education system; (Iii) work and analysis of intercultural education practices; (Iv) analysis and debate on reference texts.
It is intended that the students, in groups, deepen theoretical and practical way relevant aspects according to their interests.

Attendance system

The evaluation will include:
- Work done in the classroom sessions (50%)
- An individual based on a critical review of the issues addressed in Program (50%).
