Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

-Know the relevant legislation for the performance of the Sign Language Interpreter’s functions and the
Code of Ethics and Conduct lines.
-Develop the ability to conduct a thorough reflection on attitudes and the role of interpreter of Portuguese Sign Language in Deaf community and society in general.
-Building an ethical awareness and ethical appropriate to Sign Language Interpreter, and the
communication link between two languages and two cultures.


-General concepts of ethics and professional conduct;
-The Sign Language Interpreter’s profession;
-Code of Ethics and Conduct lines;
-Working conditions;
-Professional diseases;
-National and international Deaf Community;
-Different views and interrelationships;
-Educational and mental health contexts;
-Case study.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

-Understanding the basic functions of the interpreter and translator of sign language and the acquisition of theoretical and practical basic knowledge.
-The themes addressed in this curricular unit intend to bring students to reflect and put into practice the
ethical and moral principles that should govern their professional activity.
-The case studies adapted to different professional contexts allows to establish the relationship between
theory and practice.

Teaching methodologies

-Distribution of documentation;
-Focused thematic research;
-Presentation of issues related to student’s post content research;
-Discussion and debate;
-Analysis of selected texts;
-Study of case studies.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The simulation and analysis of case studies allow students to develop a sensibility informed on ethics
issues that may arise during the performance of their duties, acting in accordance with the Code of Ethics
and Conduct lines of Sign Language Interpreters, and knowing how to relate them to the social and cultural contexts in which they are.
It is expected an active and interested participation by students considered essential to the progress of
this curricular unit and achieving success in the assessments.
Class participation, oriented research, exercises proposed by the teacher. Participation in extracurricular
activities potentiate the knowledge acquired in class (seminars, meetings, conferences and events related
to deaf community).

1 written test – 40%
1 written research work – 50%
