Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)
Portuguese Sign Language.
 
 This course introduces knowledge within the framework of the Portuguese Sign Language linguistics.
 Knowledge and skills will be presented, especially in the areas of phonology of the LGP, which are also processed in the disciplines of Portuguese sign language and theory and practice of Translation and Interpretation.
 The development and deepening of theoretical and practical knowledge of specific core language of the course, will contribute to making students aware of the rules governing the Portuguese sign language and ways to put them into practice in specific contexts, in order to facilitate the task of the translation from and to the LGP. 
Syllabus
1. Introduction to linguistic studies on sign languages all over the world in general and in Portugal.
 
 - Diferent  Language concepts
 - Language diversity
 - Properties of natural languages and specificities of sign languages
 - Corpora and sign notation systems 
 - Arbitrary signs; symbolic signs; and iconic signs
 
 2. General and specific terminology of phonology of Portuguese sign language, having as objects
 of study:
 
 - Phonological analysis parameters /querems
 . Hand configuration
 . Location
 . Orientation
 . Movement
 . Non manual aspects
 
 -  Minimum pairs LGP
 - Classifiers 
 
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student should have a good knowledge of Linguistics of Portuguese sign
 language in the fields worked on at this stage of learning. The knowledge of phonological parameters of
 LGP will allow students to meet the minimum distinctive units that form and attach meaning to the superior units of LGP. 
Teaching methodologies
Theoretical approach: themes; distribution of documentation; theme-oriented research; presentation of
 topics related to the post content research students; discussion and debate. Practical approach: practical
 exercises to collect examples of signs related to the subjects; phanological sign analysis exercises;
 execution of concrete examples (signs of LGP) in order to consolidate knowledge previously acquired.  
Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes
The realization of diverse exercises will allow the consolidation of knowledge and an in-depth reflection on
 the new concepts covered in the UC. 
Assessment methodologies and evidences
The evaluation process will be oriented with focus on the following parameters:
 -development of work in the classroom /home, participation and attendance (10%).
 -autonomous work –40% development of a piece of research on one of the themes dealt with on the course -test (50%) written and/or recorded on video, based on the contents of the syllabus.
