Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

At the end of the course unit the student should be able to:
- Understand the relevance of the historical approach to the study of media;
- Understand the genesis and evolution of the media;
- Integrate the study of any medium in the respective political, economic and social context of Portugal and in the world;
- Analyse the impact of each media in its respective time in Portugal and in the world;
- Point out the rapid evolution of the media over the last thirty years.

- The invention of the periodic and industrial press
- The mass press - Penny Press
- The information agencies
- Advertising
- The photograph
- Freedom of expression control procedures - censorship (Estado Novo)
- The radio
- The television
- New media, new journalism and new audiences


Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the UC intended learning outcomes

Based on the objectives established for this curricular unit, the syllabus contents allow students to have a broad understanding of the historical evolution of the media in Portugal and in the world.It is also intended to develop an analytical and critical view of the current media system. In addition, the content includes an in-depth approach to the transformations and challenges faced by media in the digital age.

Teaching methodologies

The sessions are centered on the presentation of concepts, face-to-face debates and practical exercises. Students are invited to participate in activities at all classes and regularly present the results of the work they do.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

Teaching methodologies value the balance between the exposition of concepts and an effective participation of students through exercises and presentations of papers. Scientific knowledge about the history of the media is developed through updated academic bibliography and through critical reflection on presented contents. The purpose is to develop a broad knowledge about the evolution of the media system in Portugal and in the world, as established in the objectives of the UC.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The work developed will be subject to continuous and summative assessment implying:
a) Test: 50%
b) Group work: 30%
c) Participation activities: 20%
