Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

Portuguese Sign Language.

This course aims to provide students on this course with theoretical knowledge of the special relationship that human beings, in particular deaf people, establish with auditory perception and visual perception and the implications of this in everyday life and learning.
Getting to know recent investigation papers about Sign Languages, lexicographic, didactical, and pedagogical bilingual materials.
The skills developed are those considered essential to the understanding and use of concepts and the
practical implications in carrying out their profession, under the preferential modes of communication of
the deaf and hearing actors with whom they work.


Syllabus

Hearing and vision, their specific characteristics and how the absence of one or two of these senses
affects people's lives in regard to the way they adapt to their environment. How people interpret, feel about and control these absences and, on the other hand, how society regards, interacts with and benefits or harms people with partial or profound hearing loss, poor vision, blindness or deaf-blindness, identifying barriers and learning ways to secure real accessibility to these population.
The way in which research, taking into account the characteristics of the deaf person, the deaf community and the use of a visuospatial language, Sign Language, responds to the ways in which deaf people learn and the development of lexicographic, didactic and pedagogic bilingual materials, using a methodology that takes into account these same specific characteristics, exploring the importance that vision has for the deaf population and that tactile perception has for the deafblind population.

The acquisition of different perspectives and knowledge that allow a broad, pragmatic view of the concepts
developed during the curricular unit.

Teaching methodologies

Topics to be studied; documentation distribution; focused thematic research; presentation of issues
related to post research content by students; discussion and debate.
During the UC there will the opportunity to share different developmental and educational perspectives of a socio-political, and pedagogic nature.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's intended learning outcomes

The exploration of the various topics discussed in class as well as the reflections on these issues, will help
students to internalize information and important data that will enable them to develop their vision of the
deaf community, their language, culture and identity, as well as the community’s mode of representation ofthe world and society. The internalization of this knowledge and understanding will also allow these future professionals to have a more informed interaction with the Deaf community and they will be capable of achieving good performances and better results.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

Attendance and participation in classes and proposed activities. - 20%
Critical report containing reports of recent studies, national and international, related to the profession of sign language interpreter and to the linguistics of sign languages (Lexicography of sign languages, bilingual and didactic materials, glossaries, notation and transcription systems for SL and SL electronic corpus. - 40%
Individual Written work presented in class of a scientific paper related to one of the above subjects. - 40%
